Arrest Made in Midlothian Village Homicide

The Richmond Police Department, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s Regional Fugitive Task Force, has made an arrest for the homicide at the Midlothian Village Apartments earlier this month.

Larry M. Scott, 31, of the 5600 block of Petosky Avenue was arrested this morning in the 5600 block of Petosky Avenue without incident. He has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and also has an outstanding warrant from Chesterfield County. His photo is attached.

At approximately 11:13 a.m., Monday, May 9, officers were called to the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike for a report of a double shooting. They arrived to find two adult males outside of the apartment complex each suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Both victims, one of whom had life-threatening injuries, were transported to a local hospital. Rashawn A. Brathwaite, 23, of the 2300 block of Whitcomb Street, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital later that day.

The second victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released. Detectives believe the motive of the shooting was robbery.

Witnesses to Jefferson Davis Highway Altercation Sought

Richmond Police detectives are asking for the public’s help to identify two individuals who may have witnessed an altercation on Jefferson Davis Highway earlier this month.

These two men are believed to have witnessed an altercation between a man and a woman that occurred at approximately 5:48 p.m. on May 3 near the 1900 block of Jefferson Davis Highway.

Suspect Sought in Walmart Arson

The Richmond Police Department and Richmond Fire Investigation’s Unit need the public’s help to identify the suspect in the attached photo and video (video sent separately), who lit a fire inside Walmart late last month.

At approximately 12:24 p.m. on April 29, officers responded to a report of arson at Walmart, located at 2401 Sheila Lane. Surveillance video from the store shows the suspect lit a small fire on a shelf and left the aisle.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5’10” tall with spiky hair. He was wearing a bright orange sweatshirt at the time of the incident.

Arrest Made in Coalter Street Shooting

A Richmond man has been arrested and charged with two felonies in connection with a shooting that occurred last Saturday in Mosby Court.

Ballard T. Brinkley Jr, 26, of the 1300 block of Coalter Street, was taken into custody this morning by the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force. He is charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His booking photo is attached.

Around 4:15 p.m. on May 20, officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 1400 block of Coalter Street. Upon arrival, they located the adult male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Suspect Sought in Z Express Robbery

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the suspect, who robbed a south side convenience store last night and is a person of interest in several robberies in the metro Richmond area.

At approximately 10:46 p.m. on May 23, officers responded to a reported commercial robbery at the Z Express located at 5111 Midlothian Turnpike. The victim stated the suspect entered the store, displayed a handgun and demanded money from the cash register. The suspect then left the store and was last seen walking behind the business on Old Midlothian Turnpike.

The suspect is described as a black male in his late 30s, 5’9” tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds. He wore a black hoodie, black pants, white gloves, sunglasses and a black cloth over his face at the time of the incident. He also has a distinctive walk, which was described as a “duck walk.”

Detectives believe that since January this individual may have been involved in numerous robberies on the city’s south side, in the Washington Park neighborhood, and in the Azalea area of Henrico County.

Stay Safe this Summer in the James River Park System

WHAT:                     Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, Richmond Fire Department and the Richmond Police Department encourage safe use of the James River Park System

WHERE:                  Brown’s Island vehicle bridge at Tredegar Street

BACKGROUND:     Now that sunny skies have (finally) returned and summer temperatures approach – citizens are preparing to enjoy Richmond’s many parks and outdoor amenities, including the James River Park System.

                                From biking the Buttermilk and Northbank trails to walking the Manchester Floodwall to basking on Belle Isle and in Pony Pasture, the James River Park System is a jewel of the region’s open spaces.

                                The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, the Richmond Fire Department and the Richmond Police Department want visitors to the park to enjoy it safely this summer.

                                During the press event tomorrow, Parks will discuss safety measures within the James River Park System, RPD will remind park visitors to observe restrictions (like no alcohol, no glass containers, etc.) and RFD will advise on water levels and the safe use of the James River.

                                 Following the press event the Richmond Fire Department’s Water Rescue team will engage in training scenarios with the Virginia State Police as they practice rescue situations on the river. The scenarios will take place in the grass lot next to Great Shiplock Park at 3100 Dock St.

Suspect Sought in Walgreens Larceny

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the suspect who stole cash from a Walgreens on Westover Hills Boulevard last month.

At approximately 6:24 p.m. on April 19, officers responded to a reported larceny at Walgreens, located at 1214 Westover Hills Boulevard. Minutes earlier, the suspect approached the register to pay for an item. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the suspect leans over the counter and grabs an unknown amount of money.

The suspect is described as a black male who wore a blue flat brimmed hat, a gray hoodie with a green block design on the front, a red shirt and blue pants at the time of the incident. He was seen leaving the store in a burgundy-colored sedan.

Appeal for Additional Information in Main Street Shooting

The Richmond Police Department is investigating an aggravated assault shooting that occurred early Saturday morning near the 17^th Street Farmers Market and asking the community for its help.

“Hundreds of people were leaving clubs in Shockoe Bottom when a fight broke out near the farmers market and shots were fired. One of those shots struck an innocent bystander.” said Detective Sergeant Richard Edwards with the Major Crimes Unit. “We’re asking anyone who saw or heard anything or may have captured this incident on video to contact us as their information could help us solve this case.”

At approximately 2:10 a.m., officers responded to the 1700 block of East Main Street in reference to a shooting. When they arrived, they located an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, but he is in stable condition.

Detectives believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation in the parking area of the farmers market. However, the victim was not involved in the fight.

Victim Identified in Somerset Glen Homicide

Richmond Police detectives are investigating a homicide that occurred in the Somerset Glen apartment complex yesterday evening.

At approximately 8:05 p.m., RPD officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Westover Hills Boulevard for a call of a person shot.

The victim, Hasheen E. Slaughter, 25, of the 8100 block of Provincetown Drive, Chesterfield, was found unresponsive in the breezeway of the apartment complex with apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suspects Identified in Forest Hill Drug Store Robbery

The Richmond Police Department has arrested two men in connection with a robbery that occurred yesterday morning in Forest Hill.

Emanuel T. Green, 33, of the 1500 block of Clarkson Road and Zorin A. Holton, 27, of the 800 block of Belt Boulevard were arrested and charged with robbery. Green was also charged with use of a firearm in commission. Additional charges are pending. Both booking photos are attached.

At approximately 9:51 a.m., police responded to the CVS at 6807 Forest Hill Avenue for a commercial robbery. Witnesses reported two suspects, one armed with a handgun, who demanded and took prescription narcotics from the store and left through the back of the building.

Police units from Second and Third Precincts located the suspect’s vehicle while traveling on Hull Street. After a brief pursuit, Holton, the driver of the vehicle, made an abrupt right turn and struck a tree at the 4900 block of Hull Street Road. Holton then fled on foot where he was apprehended at the 1000 block of Circle Wood Drive. The passenger, Green, was located inside the vehicle and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Bike for the Blue Remembers Fallen Officers

BACKGROUND:    As part of National Police Week, over 20 members of the Richmond Police Department join others in law enforcement to pedal in a pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. in honor of officers who have died in the line of duty.

A contingent of over 100 officers representing jurisdictions from Virginia and federal law enforcement agencies will participate.

“We organize this ride every year to honor those who lost their lives protecting the citizens and making the communities safer,” said Richmond Police Sgt. Papaleo. “Locally, this is a joint effort between Richmond, Chesterfield, VCU, Hopewell, Petersburg and Capitol police.”

                             Bike for the Blue participants will ride 110 miles on Route 1 to the nation’s capital to meet their colleagues from across the country for the Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony. Richmond Police will remember 29 RPD officers who have given their lives for the city as it participates for the 21^st year.

RPD Investigates Fatal Crash

Investigators with the Richmond Police Department’s Traffic Unit say charges are pending in a two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a young child.

Queen Maultsby, 2, of the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike, died late last night from injuries she received in the crash. Her mother, Britney Maultsby, 22, of the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike, was driving the vehicle in which her daughter was riding.

The RPD Crash Team has determined that the crash, which occurred at 4:48 p.m., Tuesday, May 10, at the intersection of 18^th and Coalter Streets, was triggered when Maultsby’s vehicle entered the intersection and collided with another vehicle. Maultsby’s vehicle was travelling west on Coalter Street at the time. The other vehicle was travelling north on 18^th Street.

Four people in Maultsby’s vehicle and one person in the other vehicle were taken to the hospital to be evaluated. Only the driver of the other vehicle remains hospitalized for evaluation.

The investigation is still on-going and charges are pending further consultation with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

Victim Identified in Jefferson Davis Highway Homicide

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim from last evening’s homicide as Travis Antoine Horton, 29, of the 3300 block of Meadowdale Blvd.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., officers were called to the parking lot of the 701 Express Store at 701 Jefferson Davis Highway for a report of a person shot. Officers arrived and found Horton, dead, in the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked in the lot. He’d been shot multiple times.

Detectives know there were several people in the area at the time who may have witnessed the shooting and, while they have good leads in this case, they ask those people to call Major Crimes Detective Anthony Coates at 804 646-0729 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. RPD Promotes Safety for Places of Worship

Mosques, churches, synagogues and all places of worship should be havens from the chaos of life. Safety is paramount and adopting a few simple procedures can dramatically increase the security of these sanctuaries and help to protect the people within and the surrounding property.

The Richmond Police Department will be hosting a safety and awareness forum for religious gathering places. The forum will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. A variety of topics will be discussed, including general safety, preparing for an emergency, firearms in places of worship and pastoral protection.

The forum is free, but registration is required to accommodate all attendees. Registration will take place on-site before the event from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Early registration is also available online. Congregations are invited to send no more than four representatives.

Second Arrest Made in Accommodation Street Shooting

The Richmond Police Department has arrested a second suspect in an aggravated assault shooting that occurred on Saturday, April 16 in Mosby Court.

The U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Zyejuan M. Redd, 18, of the 1500 block of Jennie Scher Road, in connection with the shooting.

Ki'yelle A. Whitaker, 20, of the 1700 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike was arrested last month for his role in the incident. Redd and Whitaker are charged with attempted murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Booking photos are attached.

At approximately 6:46 p.m. on April 16, officers were called to a shooting in the 1900 block of Accommodation Street. They located an adult male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was treated at the hospital for non-life threatening injuries and has since been released.

Victim Identified in Midlothian Village Homicide

One victim in a double shooting that occurred this morning at Midlothian Village on Richmond’s south side has died.

At approximately 11:13 a.m., officers were called to the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike for a report of a double shooting. They arrived to find two adult males outside of the apartment complex each suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Arrest Made in Madison Street Shooting

The Richmond Police Department has arrested a Chesterfield woman in connection with a shooting that occurred downtown last night.

Genara M. Pierce, 24 of the 5500 block of Belle Pond Drive in Chesterfield County, was arrested at the scene and charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Both charges are felonies. Her booking photo is attached.

“Thanks to the swift response by officers and the help of witnesses at the scene, the suspect was quickly taken into custody and the firearm used in the incident was recovered,” said Major Crimes Captain James Laino.

At approximately 11:55 p.m., officers responded to the 300 block of North Madison Street for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound lying on the sidewalk outside the building.

Detectives believe the shooting stemmed from an argument between the suspect and the victim, who knew each other. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Arrest Made in Afton Avenue Burglary

The Richmond Police Department has arrested two suspects in an attempted burglary that occurred last week.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on Monday, April 25, officers were called to a report of a breaking and entering at the 2100 block of Afton Avenue. The victim claimed several individuals entered and were still inside her residence.

Second Precinct Officers Christopher Duane, Crystal Nuckols and Tanner Braaten arrived on scene. As Officers Nuckols and Braaten approached the front door, one of the suspects sprinted outside. The victim’s fiancé attempted to stop him by tripping him, slowing him down.

Officers Braaten and Duane pursued the suspect into a nearby apartment where he was taken into custody. Officer Nuckols held the second suspect at the crime scene without incident.

The victims identified the subject who fled as Paul R. Moore, 22, of the 2200 block of Afton Avenue. The second suspect was a juvenile male. Both were charged with burglary. Moore’s booking photo is attached.

The suspects gained entry into the apartment through a window. A black bag containing various electronics was abandoned in the front hallway.
