The Richmond Police Department Crash Team is investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred this morning at the toll booth of the Downtown Expressway.

Today at approximately 5:19 a.m., a vehicle traveling eastbound on the Downtown Expressway collided with the toll booth in the Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority toll plaza. The vehicle struck the concrete divider between toll lanes, collided with the toll structure, and burst into flames.

A motorist traveling westbound on the Downtown Expressway observed the incident and called 911. A Virginia State Police trooper was the first on the scene, followed by RPD officers and the Richmond Fire Department.

The RPD Crash Team responded and is investigating. The vehicle was occupied solely by the driver and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries.

All eastbound lanes were closed to traffic until 9 a.m. when they re-opened. The westbound lanes were not impacted.
