Motorcyclist Identified in Fatal Crash

The Richmond Police Department Crash Team has identified the motorcyclist in the single-vehicle collision yesterday on Broad Rock Boulevard as Kevin Hernandez, 26, of Richmond.

At approximately 11:16 a.m., officers were called to the 1200 block of Broad Rock Boulevard for the report of motorcycle that collided with a utility pole. Officers arrived and found the adult male rider, Hernandez, down and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The RPD Crash Team responded to the scene and is investigating. Investigators have determined that the speed of the motorcycle was a factor in the crash.

Arrest Made, Victim Identified in Coalter Street Homicide

Richmond Police detectives have made an arrest in the Coalter Street homicide investigation and have identified the victim as Darnell Christian, 63, of Richmond.

On Friday at approximately 6:11 p.m., officers were called to the 1500 block of Coalter Street for the report of a person shot. Officers arrived and located an adult male, Christian, down on the ground, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officers and detectives were assisted by the RPD Capitol City Intelligence Center staff, who were able to review video from the area of the shooting to identify the suspect, suspect vehicle, direction of travel and vehicle tag information. This information was broadcast to patrol officers and shared with regional law enforcement.

Henrico Police, with assistance of the Virginia State Police, made a traffic stop of the suspect vehicle and detained the driver, the sole occupant, before transporting him to RPD.

RPD detectives have charged Tommy Moore, 56, of Henrico, with murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His booking photo is attached.

Victim Identified in East Main Street Death Investigation

Richmond Police detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Sunday morning in Shockoe Bottom and have identified the victim as Shamar Trimmer, 29, of Henrico.

On Sunday at approximately 3:30 a.m., officers were called to a parking lot in the 1800 block of East Main Street for the report of a person shot. Officers arrived and located an adult male, Trimmer, down on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound. Virginia State Police troopers were first on scene and, with assistance of RPD officers, provided first aid before the victim was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Detectives are investigating the possibility of an argument among individuals in the parking lot resulting in multiple individuals firing weapons and Trimmer being shot.

RPD Adopts Device for Brief Control of Non-Compliant Individuals Without Use of Force

 

The Richmond Police Department has trained and equipped officers to use a new device that allows for brief control of non-compliant individuals.

 

The BolaWrap 150 Remote Restraint Device (pictured) is a handheld tool designed to be used as a method to control from a distance a non-compliant individual in instances when the officer would be justified in handcuffing the subject but doing so could escalate into a struggle which could cause harm to the subject or the officer.

 

The device deploys a Kevlar cord with weighted anchors designed to wrap around a subject’s body to temporarily limit their mobility and ability to cause harm to themselves or another. Officers will immediately apply handcuffs to the subject and remove the cord and anchors, when possible.

 

“This technology will allow for the safe control of a subject without a use of force,” said Chief Rick Edwards. “This reduces the likelihood that officers would need to escalate their response to higher levels of force to control a situation. It allows for safer outcomes for all.”

 

When practical, the officer will loudly announce “Bola, Bola, Bola” before deploying the device. The deployment produces a loud bang sound as the cord and anchors wrap around the subject – but is designed not to cause injury.

 Arrest Made in Coalter Street Homicide Investigation

 Richmond Police detectives, with assistance of the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force, have made an arrest in the homicide that occurred last month on Coalter Street.

 Orlando Logan, 24, of Richmond, was indicted and charged with murder, use of a firearm, discharge firearm in a public place, and possession of a firearm by a violent felon in relation to the homicide of Nathaniel Mangram, 22, of Richmond. Logan was served his indictments on March 14. His booking photo is attached.

 At approximately 1:52 a.m., Tuesday, February 4, officers were called to the 1300 block of Coalter Street for the report of a person shot. Officers arrived and found an adult male, Mangram, down and unresponsive in the front yard of a structure. He had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

 Arrest Made, Victim Identified in Greshamwood Place Homicide Investigation

 Richmond Police detectives have identified the victim in the fatal shooting that occurred earlier this year as Darrell Mann, 52, of Richmond, and detectives have made an arrest.

 Misty Swift, 35, of Richmond, has been charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a violent felon. Her booking photo is attached.

 At approximately 8:28 p.m., Saturday, January 25, officers were called to the 100 block of Greshamwood Place for the report of shooting. Officers arrived and located an adult male, Mann, down on the floor inside a structure. He had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injury.

Person of Interest Sought in Fatal Collision on West Main Street

The Richmond Police Department Crash Team is asking the public to help identify the male in these photos. He is a person of interest in the fatal collision involving a pedestrian last month on West Main Street. 

At approximately 10:50 p.m., Wednesday, February 5, officers were called to the 2600 block of West Main Street for the report of a collision. Officers arrived and found an adult female, Ruthanne Berry, 52, of Richmond, down and unresponsive. She was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were considered life threatening. Berry succumbed to her injuries the following day. 

The RPD Crash Team responded to the scene and determined Berry was walking southbound on North Robinson Street and attempted to cross West Main Street in the crosswalk when she was struck by a dark-colored sedan. The driver of the vehicle did not stop and continued to drive westbound on West Main Street.

Investigators have determined the vehicle left a parking lot, located at 1911 West Main Street, at 10:46 p.m., four minutes before the driver operating the vehicle struck Berry. A photo of the suspect vehicle is also attached.

Witnesses, Video Sought in Collision Investigation

Detectives with the Richmond Police Department Crash Team, investigating the collision involving a cyclist and a vehicle on Patterson Avenue on Tuesday are asking the public to come forward with witness information or video from near the scene.

At approximately 4:38 p.m., officers were called to a collision in the 4400 block of Patterson Avenue. Officers arrived and found an adult male cyclist down and injured after the bicycle he was riding collided with a vehicle. The cyclist was transported to a local hospital with injuries that remain life-threatening.

The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene. At that location there is a parking lane between the travel lane and the dedicated bicycle lane near the curb. Crash Team investigators have determined the cyclist was riding westbound in the parking lane when the collision occurred. Investigators have also determined that speed of the vehicle or impairment of the driver were not factors in the crash.

Charges have not yet been placed. The investigation continues.

At approximately 9:12 a.m., officers were called to the 3800 block of Caulder Court for the report of a person shot. Officers arrived and found an adult male down and unresponsive in a residence. He had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Detectives with the Major Crimes division responded to investigate. Detectives interviewed residents of the townhouse complex as forensic investigators collected evidence from the scene. The investigation continues.
