Second Victim in Mosby Court Triple Shooting Dies

A second person who was wounded in a triple shooting in Mosby Court earlier this week has died. Mikkaisha D. Smoot, 16, of the 2100 block of Deforrest Street, was pronounced dead at approximately 1:00 p.m. at a local hospital after being removed from life-support.

Yesterday afternoon, another person who was shot during the same incident, Taliek K. Brown, 15, of the 400 block of East Brookland Park Boulevard, was pronounced dead at a local hospital after being removed from life-support.

Their deaths are being investigated as homicides.

At approximately 1:21 a.m., Wednesday, March 29, RPD officers were called to the 1900 block of Accommodation Street for a report of gunfire. They arrived and found Smoot and Brown lying on the ground in front of an apartment building. Both juveniles were suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.

An adult female was also located suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound. She is expected to recover.

At approximately 1:21 a.m., Wednesday, March 29, RPD officers were called to the 1900 block of Accommodation Street for a report of gunfire. They arrived and found Taliek and a juvenile female lying on the ground in front of an apartment building. Both juveniles were suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.

An adult female was also located suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

All three were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Monument Avenue 10K Traffic Advisory

March 30, 2017

The Monument Avenue 10K will begin Saturday morning, and an estimated 40,000 participants will take to city streets. Numerous road closures and “No Parking” zones will be in effect as a result.

Events begin at 8 a.m. with the Virginia 529 Kids Run followed by the start of the Monument Avenue 10K at 8:30 a.m. Street closures and “No Parking” zones go into effect on some streets, such as West Franklin Street at 6 a.m. and West Broad Street at 3 p.m. tomorrow. Cars parked along the race course will be towed.  

During the event, Monument Avenue will be closed between Stuart Circle and Staples Mill Road. Portions of other main streets will also be closed, including West Broad Street, West Grace Street, West Franklin Street and Lombardy Street. (See maps below.)

Missing Henrico Man Sought

The Richmond Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing man, Srour A. Al-Hayajneh, who has been missing since Tuesday, March 28. His photo is attached.

Al-Hayajneh, 62, was last seen leaving the Omni Richmond Hotel at 100 S. 12^th St. He is described as a white male with a fair complexion, 5’0 tall, with brown eyes and short gray hair, and weighing approximately 177 pounds. He drives a gold 2008 Toyota Sienna minivan with “RVA TAXI” on each side. The vehicle has Virginia license plate H125261.

Two Teens, Woman Shot in Accommodation Street Aggravated Assaults

Three persons, including two teens, were injured in an early morning shooting today.

At approximately 1:21 a.m., officers were called to the 1900 block of Accommodation Street for the report of random gunfire.

Officers arrived and found a juvenile male and a juvenile female suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. An adult female was also found with an apparent gunshot wound that was not considered life threatening. The two juveniles were transported to a local hospital with injuries that are considered life threatening.

“Two of Richmond’s teenagers were struck down, and a third person was injured, during an early morning shooting today – and in any incident where children are involved, it is especially critical to us to provide closure to the families,” said Chief Alfred Durham. “The Department is working to not only solve this and every case of violent crime in our neighborhoods but we are working diligently on many fronts to reduce the violence before it happens. We have patrol officers, Focus Mission Team units and the Intervention and Prevention units working around the clock to prevent crime – but we need the public to come forward and provide information before violence breaks out.”

RPD Warns of New Social Media Extortion Scam

Richmond Police detectives are investigating a new social media extortion scam

Scammers are using the Facebook and WhatsApp mobile applications to threaten and defraud individuals to send a specified amount of money. The text messages and phone calls have, so far, been written and spoken in Spanish but all should be aware of this scam.

These individuals use Facebook to find photos of the target and their family and WhatsApp to initiate voice or text messaging over the phone.

How the scam works:

• A text message is received from an unknown number stating the victim owes money.
• The scammer will call or send a second message to the victim demanding about $200-$250.
• The scammer will threaten to cause harm to the victim’s family in an attempt to collect the demanded amount. If the victim ignores the threats, the scammer will then send photos of the victim’s family and friends that have been found on Facebook.
• If the victim continues to ignore the threats, the scammer will proceed to send violent and graphic videos. The scammer will also claim they are in close proximity and will harm the victim if the money is not paid.
• The scammer will provide instructions informing the victim where to go and how to send the requested amount of money. They will be persistent and demand that the victim does not contact the police.
• Additional messages may be received from other unknown individuals in an attempt to convince the victim more than one participant is involved. If the victim blocks the phone numbers, additional messages from other phone numbers may be received.

It is important to understand these types of extortion scams are typically of an international scope and put people in great fear. The best way to prevent this happening to you or your loved ones is revisiting the security settings on your social media pages. Make sure your settings are set to private so the public does not have access to your personal content.

La Policía de Richmond les Informa de Extorciones a Través de las Redes Sociales

Los detectives de la policía de Richmond están investigando una nueva estafa de extorsión través de los medios sociales que están afectando  a la comunidad  y queremos informar a la comunidad Latina de esto crímenes.

Los estafadores están utilizando las aplicaciones móviles de Facebook , textos, correos electrónicos y WhatsApp para amenazar y defraudar a sus víctimas a través de envío de dinero.

Estas personas utilizan el Facebook y  WhatsApp para encontrar fotos de las víctimas  y de sus familias para establecer una conversación directa y creíble por textos y teléfonos.

Cómo funciona la estafa:

• La victima recibe un mensaje de texto de un número desconocido que indica que debe dinero.
•  El estafador llama o envía un segundo mensaje a la víctima exigiendo una cantidad de dinero.
•  El estafador amenaza con causar daño a la familia de la víctima en un intento de cobrar la cantidad demandada. Si la víctima ignora las amenazas, el estafador envía  fotos de la familia de la víctima y amigos que han encontrado en Facebook.
• Si la víctima sigue ignorando las amenazas, el estafador procederá enviando videos violentos y gráficos. El estafador también afirmará que saben mucho  de sus vidas y le causaran daño si el dinero no es recibido.
•  El estafador proporcionará instrucciones  informando a la víctima a dónde ir y cómo enviar la cantidad de dinero solicitada. Serán persistentes y exigirán que la víctima no entre en contacto con la policía.
• Podrían recibir mensajes adicionales de otras personas desconocidas en un intento de convencer a la víctima de que hay otras personas involucradas. Si la víctima bloquea los números de teléfono, podrían recibir mensajes adicionales de otros números de teléfono.

Es importante entender que estos tipos de estafas y extorsión son típicamente internacionales y ponen a sus víctimas en un gran miedo. La mejor manera de evitar que esto le suceda a usted o algunos de sus seres queridos es revisando la configuración de seguridad en sus páginas de redes sociales. Asegúrese de que sus configuraciones estén privadas para que el público no tenga acceso a su contenido personal.
