New Year’s Eve Safety

New Year’s Eve Safety

The Richmond Police Department would like to wish everyone a safe and happy New Year! The Department also reminds the public that firing a gun in the city limits is illegal and dangerous even with misguided attempts at celebration.

The Richmond Police Department would also like to remind citizens they have a role in New Year’s Eve safety. If you plan to drink alcohol, make sure you plan a safe ride home. Identify a designated driver, use a taxi service, use a ride-sharing service or walk. A checkpoint, in partnership with Virginia DMV’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, will be in force on Friday night and RPD will maintain concentrated efforts to address motorists who are driving while impaired on New Year’s Eve.

Other safety tips include remaining aware of your surroundings when in large crowds and, when possible, traveling in pairs or in groups. If you should see suspicious activity, call 911.

Stay alert through the evening – and have a happy new year!
