Victim Identified, Person of Interest Detained in Fairfield Way Homicide Investigation, Charged for Separate Shooting

 

Richmond Police detectives have in custody an individual who is a person of interest in the homicide that occurred in the parking lot of the Richmond Justice Center on Monday.

 

Naim Crews, Jr., 28, of Richmond, was detained by RPD officers on Monday afternoon in the Fairmount neighborhood after receiving information of his possible involvement in a shooting that occurred on Sunday. Officers and detectives, coordinating with Major Crimes detectives investigating the homicide in the parking lot of the Richmond Justice Center, developed him as a person of interest in that shooting, as well.

 

On Sunday at approximately 11:38 a.m., an employee of a convenience store in the 1400 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike reported an adult male entered the store, demanded money and started to shoot. The employee, an adult male, returned fire and was struck and injured. The suspect was not injured and left the area. Officers arrived and the victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were considered life threatening. Following investigation, Crews Jr. has been charged with attempted murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony for the shooting on Mechanicsville Turnpike. Detectives have identified the victim in the homicide in the parking lot of the Richmond Justice Center as Timothy Ward, 34, of Henrico County. Charges for Crews, Jr. in this case are pending.

 

On Monday at approximately 12:04 p.m., a Richmond Police Department detective was in the parking lot of the Richmond Justice Center, located in the 1700 block of Fairfield Way, walking towards the building. The detective heard a gunshot nearby and investigated. In the parking lot near the roadway the detective found an adult male, Ward, down and unresponsive. He had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

 

Detectives are continuing to investigate this homicide and the aggravated assault at the convenience store.
