Victim Identified in Single-Vehicle Traffic Fatality on Warwick Road,

Arrest Made

 

The Richmond Police Department’s Crash Team investigators have identified the passenger who was killed in a single-vehicle fatal crash that occurred early Wednesday morning as Larry Johnson, 35, of Richmond.

 

At approximately 3:43 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, officers responded to the 5200 block of Warwick Road for a report of a vehicle that had crashed into a tree. Upon arrival, officers located a lone occupant, Johnson, seated in the passenger seat, unresponsive and not breathing. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

 

The driver fled the scene prior to police arrival.

 

During the investigation, detectives pursued leads that resulted in the identification and location of the driver. Investigators determined that William Sumner, Jr., 34, of Chesterfield, was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash. Sumner was later located at a nearby motel and taken into custody. He has been charged with felony hit-and-run, and additional charges are pending. His booking photo is unavailable at this time.
