Victim Identified, Arrest Made in Afton Avenue Homicide

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim in Saturday afternoon’s homicide which occurred on Afton Avenue as Alexander Briggs, 21, of the 2400 block of Flint Street.

At approximately 12:32 p.m., Saturday, officers responded to the 2200 block of Afton Avenue for the report of two people shot. When police arrived, they found Briggs lying on a sidewalk suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Officers also discovered another male victim suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

The other individual who was shot, Carrol Speights, 25, of the 00 block of Frank Street was arrested the same day and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and aggravated assault. Additional charges are pending.

Both were transported to a local hospital to be treated. Briggs succumbed to his injuries Wednesday evening.

Traffic Advisory: 2nd Street Festival Street Closures and No Parking

Traffic will be affected as hundreds are expected at the 29th annual 2^nd Street Festival in Jackson Ward this weekend.

The following streets will be closed beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 6 and will reopen midnight Sunday, Oct. 8.

·         North 2^nd Street between East Broad and Leigh Streets

·         East Clay Street between North 1^st and 3^rd Streets

·         East Marshall Street between 1^st and 3^rd Streets

The following streets will be closed beginning 6 a.m. Friday Oct. 7 and will reopen midnight Sunday, Oct 8.

·         North 2^nd Street between East Leigh and Jackson Street

·         East Leigh Street between North 1^st and 3^rd Street

·         North 1^st Street between East Broad and Leigh Streets (closing 7 a.m.)

·         East Marshall Street between North Adams and 1^st Streets (closing 7 a.m.)

There will be NO PARKING at these locations beginning 9 a.m. Friday Oct. 7.

Victim Identified in Midlothian Village Homicide

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim in last night’s homicide in the Midlothian Village apartment complex as Larry M. Scott, 32, of the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike.

At approximately 10:37 p.m. yesterday, police responded to the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike for a report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they located Scott inside an apartment building suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Suspect Sought in Forest Hill Bank Robbery

The Richmond Police Department is seeking information about a commercial robbery that occurred this afternoon in the Forest Hill neighborhood. 

At around 3:25 p.m. today, police were called for a commercial robbery which occurred at the Wells Fargo at 7119 Forest Hill Avenue. The suspect entered the bank and after pacing around the lobby for a few minutes, approached a teller with a note demanding money. The teller complied and handed the suspect a plastic bag with cash. The suspect then fled the scene on foot.

The suspect is described as a white male with a short, light brown beard. He is possibly in his late-30s to early-40s, 5’6” to 5’9” tall, and with a thin build. At the time, he was wearing a tan baseball hat with a red patch, a dark necklace with light-colored shells, a dark-colored pullover sweater with a zipper, a dark polo with white stripes underneath, blue denim jeans, and white sneakers with a dark stripe, and sunglasses.

Victim Identified in Clarkson Road Homicide

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim in last night’s homicide on Clarkson Road as Bryant S. Jordan, 24, of the 5900 block of Sugarbush Drive.

At approximately 10:21 p.m., police were called to the 1400 block of Clarkson Road for the report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they found Jordan suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were told a suspect was seen running toward a residence along the 1400 block of Clarkson Road shortly after.  SWAT responded to clear the residence, but the suspect was not located.

“We would like to thank the Southwood residents for their patience while police conducted their investigation,” said Capt. James Laino, “The incident impacted the community for over six hours and we appreciate the cooperation.”

A medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Community Walk in Willow Lawn and Sauer’s Gardens

BACKGROUND:     Chief Alfred Durham and the Command Staff will lead the officers of the Richmond Police Department on a walk at 5:30 p.m. today, Oct. 3, through the Willow Lawn and Sauer’s Gardens neighborhoods. During the walk, officers will speak with community members about safety concerns they may have and what they would like to see from the Richmond Police Department.

Sector 311 Lieutenant Nathaniel Bynum said the primary crime concerns are commercial robberies, commercial burglaries, and residential larcenies.

“As we approach the holiday season, it’s important to be extra cautious,” said Lt. Bynum. “Criminals view the holidays as an open invitation to take valuables from your businesses, homes, and vehicles.”

This event is the latest in a series of walks conducted by the Richmond Police Department in neighborhoods throughout the city.

RPD Invites Community to Have Coffee with a Cop
