Hit and Run with Pedestrian Struck in the 1700 block of Clarkson Road.

The Richmond Police Department’s Hit and Run Unit is investigating a hit and run that occurred February 12, 2022 in the 1700 block of Clarkson Road.

At approximately 7:25 p.m., Richmond Police responded to a report of a juvenile pedestrian struck by a vehicle.  The juvenile was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The striking vehicle stopped briefly, and then fled the scene. The striking vehicle is described as a silver in color four door Toyota Corolla. The vehicle should be missing the passenger side mirror.

Jennie Scher Road Death Investigation

At approximately 4:40 p.m., Richmond Police officers responded to the report of a person down in the 1400 block of Jennie Scher Road. Officers arrived and found a 17-year old juvenile male with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Statement on River City Middle School Incident

Today at approximately 10:30 a.m., a Richmond Police Department School Resource Officer inside River City Middle confiscated a firearm from the backpack of a 13-year old student. Once located, the juvenile was taken into police custody and has been charged with the following:

• possession of a firearm on school property
• possession of a firearm by a minor
• possession of a concealed weapon
• possession of marijuana

Due to the seriousness of the charges, the juvenile has been transported and accepted into juvenile intake.

Slain on Birthday, Detectives Still Seek Killer

Since Andrew Gary was shot and killed on his birthday in 2020, detectives with the Richmond Police Department have been investigating the homicide. Detectives are renewing their call for the public to come forward with information that can lead to Gary’s killer.

At approximately 12:03 a.m., on Tuesday, July 28, 2020, officers were called to an apartment complex in the 900 block of North 31^st Street for the report of a shooting. Officers arrived and found Andrew Gary, 33, of Richmond, down and unresponsive outside a residence, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite officers and RAA emergency personnel providing medical attention to Gary, he died at the scene.

Gary was with a group of friends when he was shot by someone standing near an adjacent building in the complex. Detectives have determined this shooting was most likely a case of mistaken identity and may be connected to a shooting at the same location two weeks prior, which killed a juvenile male, 15, and injured a juvenile female, 3.

The family of Andrew Gary has provided his photo in hopes of generating tips and information from those who knew him or have details about the gunfire that took his life on the anniversary of his birth.

Victim Identified in South Randolph Street Death Investigation

Richmond Police detectives have identified the victim in Monday morning’s death investigation as Rachel Scott, 42, of Beaverdam, VA.

Monday morning at approximately 11:42 a.m., Richmond Police responded to the 1400 block of South Randolph Street for the report of a person down. Officers arrived and located an adult female, Scott, with apparent injuries and unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Statement by Richmond Police Chief Gerald Smith on the Sentencing of Waseem Hackett

We are greatly relieved at the just outcome of this case and that the 25 years active sentence was handed down. This is an example of individuals being held responsible for their actions.

On behalf of the men and women serving and protecting our community, I would like to thank Judge Beverly Snukals, Commonwealth Attorney Colette McEachin and her Office, and Deputy Commonwealth Attorney Michael Hollomon for their work in bringing this case to a successful conclusion. Third Precinct Officers Make Arrests for Catalytic Converter Thefts

After receiving a call for a suspicious person under a parked vehicle on Westover Hills Boulevard, Third Precinct officers responded quickly and made three arrests.

“One phone call, three arrests and other thefts averted,” said Third Precinct Commander Faith Flippo. “That is the power of community members looking out for each other, sharing information with RPD, and excellent police work from officers.”

At approximately 1:23 a.m. on Friday, February 11, officers arrived for the call for service and observed a male under a vehicle. He attempted to flee the area on foot but was apprehended by patrol officers.

In a nearby vehicle, officers found two other males with a firearm, tools and a catalytic converter which had been removed from a vehicle. A photo of the seized items is attached.

Officers arrested Gregory Hopkins, 26, Christopher Thomas, 40, and Taliaferro Williams, 40 and charged all three with destruction of property and petit larceny. All three are from Richmond. Their booking photos are also attached.

Richmond is experiencing high volumes of catalytic converter thefts. Please consider using some of these safety tips:

• Park in well-lit areas
• Set your car alarm sensor to detect vibration
• Install security cameras to deter thieves
• If you have a garage, consider parking in it and keep it secured
• If you see anyone climbing under a vehicle – call 911
