No Parking Advisory: Possible September 16 Assembly

There will be no parking zones on several streets due to possible assemblies this weekend.

Monument Avenue

NO PARKING zones will be designated beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 15 to 11 p.m. Saturday for the following roads:

• Monument Avenue between North Lombardy Street and North Meadow Street
• North Allen Avenue between West Grace Street and Park Avenue
• West Grace Street westbound between North Allen Avenue and North Lombardy Street
• West Grace Street east bound between North Allen Avenue and North Meadow Street

Maps will also be posted on the Richmond Police Department website.

 

 

5th Avenue Double Shooting

The Richmond Police Department is investigating a double shooting that occurred last weekend.

At approximately 10:21 p.m., Saturday, September 9, RPD officers were called to the 3200 block of 5^th Avenue for a report of a person shot. They quickly located two victims who had been shot:

1.       Female, under 10 years of age, with a non-life threatening wound.

2.       Male, in his 50s, with a life-threatening wound.

The female victim was located on a porch of a residence on 5^th Avenue and the male victim was located around the corner on Pollock Street.

The victims are not related and, at this time, detectives have not linked this incident to any other shootings in the city.

Gilpin Court Shooting Victims Identified

The Richmond Police Department has identified the four victims in two fatal shooting incidents that occurred early yesterday morning in Gilpin Court. They have all been classified as homicides.

1. At approximately 4:26 a.m., Sunday, September 10, RPD officers were called to the 1200 block of St. Paul Street for a report of random gunfire. When they arrived, they were directed to an apartment where they discovered the bodies of three adults who had been shot. They are:
1. Aaron Robinson, 50, of the 1200 block of St. Paul Street
2. Jenelle Smith, 26, of the 1200 block of St. James Street
3. Cynthia K. Williams, 26, of the 1200 block of St. James Street
2. At approximately 5:40 a.m. RPD officers at the scene of the St. Paul Street shooting incident heard the sound of gunfire nearby. They responded and discovered the body of Marvin Christopher Eley, 26, of the 1400 block of 1^st Street, lying on the ground in the 100 block of Federal Street. He had been shot in the 1200 block of St. James Street.

At this time, RPD detectives have not developed any information to directly connect the two shooting incidents.

“We have a team of detectives who are working hard to solve these crimes,” said Chief Alfred Durham. “We need help before the first shot is fired. There is almost always a back story to these shootings. We support the empowerment of more residents on behalf of their communities. They play a critical role in reducing the violence in their communities.”

Powhite Parkway Pedestrian Fatality

The Richmond Police Department Crash Team is investigating a pedestrian fatality that occurred this morning on the Powhite Parkway.

At approximately 6:21 a.m., a vehicle travelling in the center, southbound EZ-Pass lane of the Powhite Parkway struck a person in the roadway. It occurred several hundred feet south of the Forest Hill Avenue overpass.

The victim has been identified as Julio Cesar Lopez Cornel, 39, of the 400 block of Lingstrom Lane, North Chesterfield, VA. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and has been interviewed by RPD Crash Team investigators.

The investigation is still in its early stages. No decision has been made on possible charges, if any, until investigators present their findings to the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

All southbound EZ-Pass lanes of the Powhite Parkway were reopened approximately three hours after the incident occurred. Traffic was able to get by either by exiting onto Forest Hill Avenue or travelling through the right-hand EZ-Pass and cash toll lanes.

Gilpin Court Fatal Shooting Incidents

The Richmond Police Department is investigating two fatal shooting incidents that occurred early this morning in Gilpin Court resulting in the deaths of four people.

1. At approximately 4:26 a.m., RPD officers were called to the 1200 block of St. Paul’s Street for a report of random gunfire. When they arrived, they were directed to an apartment where they discovered the bodies of three adults. They had all apparently been shot.
2. At approximately 5:40 a.m. RPD officers at the scene of the St. Paul’s Street shooting incident heard the sound of gunfire nearby. They responded and discovered the body of an adult male lying on the ground outside an apartment building in the 100 block of Federal Street. He had apparently been shot.

The identities of the victims will be released once they have been positively identified and their next of kin have been notified.

At this time, RPD detectives have not developed any information to directly connect the two shooting incidents.

Summer Fugitives and Firearms Initiative

WHAT:                       Summer Fugitives and Firearms Initiative Press Conference

BACKGROUND:     This summer the Richmond Police Department partnered again with Virginia State Police to focus on reducing violent crime in the city. They confiscated over 130 illegal firearms and served nearly 300 arrest warrants as part of their combined Fugitives and Firearms Initiative.

“FFI makes a difference in Richmond, no doubt about it,” Chief Alfred Durham said. “These officers work together to get firearms off the street and put wanted parties behind bars by targeting certain areas of the city.”

FFI has played a major role in a reduction of violent crime during this time period. From June 1 to September 6, 2017, the city saw an 8 percent reduction in violent crime and a 7 percent reduction in overall crime.

Chief Durham, Virginia State Police Capt. Chumley, the FFI officers and the officer in charge of this summer’s initiative – Lt. Jeremy Sayles – will discuss its impact and some of the stories behind the fugitives and firearms brought in during FFI at Friday’s news conference.

Suspect Sought in Motor Vehicle Theft

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the individual in the photo who is believed to be responsible for theft of a motor vehicle in the city’s Southside.

At approximately 12:16 p.m. on Monday, September 4, officers responded to the 5300 block of Hull Street Road for the report of a stolen vehicle. The victim stated he left the vehicle running while he went into the store. The vehicle was recovered shortly after.

The suspect is described as a black female with a dark complexion. She is seen wearing a black baseball hat, sunglasses, a white T-shirt and dark-colored shorts.
