Victim Identified, Arrest Made in Sussex Street Homicide

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim of last night’s homicide in Whitcomb Court as Makayla A. Gregory, 20, of the 200 block of Henry Clay Road, Ashland, VA. 

At approximately 10:32 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, officers responded to the 2000 block of Sussex Street for the reports of random gunfire and a person shot.  Once on scene, police found a vehicle parked on the side of the road with damage from gunfire.  They also located Gregory and another adult female near the vehicle who appeared to have been shot. 

They were both taken to a local hospital, where Gregory succumbed to her injuries.  The other victim is being treated for a life-threatening injury and is listed in critical condition. 

RPD has arrested Justin J. Diggs, 24, of the 7300 block of Woodside Street, in connection with this homicide.  He has been charged with Aggravated Malicious Wounding, Attempted Robbery, and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.  Diggs also sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound during the incident.  His booking photo is not yet available.
