Life-Threatening Collision Involving Pedestrian on Broad Rock Boulevard

 

The Richmond Police Department Crash Team is investigating a life-threatening collision involving a pedestrian and an unidentified vehicle in the 1200 block of Broad Rock Boulevard.

On Saturday, November 22, at approximately 4:10 a.m., officers responded to a report of a person laying in the roadway in the 1200 block of Broad Rock Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male lying injured in the roadway in the left travel lane on the south side of Broad Rock Boulevard (between Belt Boulevard & Clover Lane) after being struck by a vehicle. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he remains in life-threatening condition. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene without stopping or rendering aid to the victim.

The RPD Crash Team responded to the scene and determined the pedestrian was crossing from the north to the south side of the street heading towards Southwood Parkway when he was struck by the vehicle.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Accidente de tránsito pone en peligro la vida de peatón en Broad Rock Boulevard

 

El equipo de investigación de accidentes del Departamento de Policía de Richmond está investigando un incidente ocurrido en la manzana 1200 de Broad Rock Boulevard en el que un vehículo no identificado puso en peligro la vida de un peatón.

Hoy, sábado, aproximadamente a las 4:10 a.m., los agentes respondieron a un reporte de una persona tendida en la calle de la cuadra 1200 de Broad Rock Boulevard. A su llegada, los agentes encontraron a un hombre adulto herido, en el carril izquierdo del lado sur de Broad Rock Boulevard (entre Belt Boulevard y Clover Lane), quien había sido atropellado por un vehículo. La víctima fue trasladada a un hospital local, donde permanece en estado crítico y en peligro de muerte. El conductor del vehículo huyó del lugar sin detenerse ni prestar ayuda a la víctima.

El equipo de respuesta de la RPD acudió al lugar y determinó que el peatón cruzaba del lado norte al sur de la calle en dirección a Southwood Parkway cuando fue atropellado por el vehículo.

El incidente continúa bajo investigación.

WHAT:            Fueled by generous donations, first responders are suiting up for a different kind of mission – helping 28 young shoppers load their carts with winter warmth. Guiding them down every aisle will be the smiling crews of the Richmond Ambulance Authority, the city’s Department of Emergency Communications, Preparedness and Response, the Richmond Fire Department, and Richmond Police Department – turning a routine shopping trip into an unforgettable adventure.

BACKGROUND:

Through the partnership with Walmart and Clovia Lawrence of Project Give Back, this heartwarming annual event pairs first responders with Richmond youth identified by community partners as needing winter essentials – everything from heavy coats to warm boots to gear that defends against Virginia’s coldest days. Each child receives $130 to shop the store alongside a dedicated first responder, turning practical needs into unforgettable moments.

 

Donations by Walmart, Project Give Back and RPD personnel have made this event possible. Led by RPD’s Community, Youth & Intervention Services Unit, this Shop with a Hero event helps build positive relationships between first responders and the families they serve – one shopping basket, silly high-five, and joyous aisle adventure at a time.

Suspect Arrested in North Thompson Street Homicide Investigation

Following swift investigative work into the fatal stabbing that occurred Tuesday on North Thompson Street, Richmond Police First Precinct officers – supported by the RPD SWAT Team and detectives – made an arrest last night.

Devonte Knott, 23, of Richmond, was located inside an apartment in the 3500 block of East Richmond Road. Officers issued repeated commands for Knott to exit the residence. After numerous unsuccessful attempts, the RPD SWAT Team and Negotiator Team responded to assist. Despite multiple further directives, Knott continued to refuse to exit. The SWAT Team then deployed CS gas in the residence, which resulted in Knott’s surrender. He was medically treated at the scene.

 

Knott has been charged with second-degree murder. Additional charges may follow. His booking photo is attached.

 

The incident under investigation occurred Tuesday at approximately 11:47 p.m. Officers were called to the 00 block of North Thompson Street for a reported assault. Upon arrival, they found Joseph Hunt, 45, of Richmond, inside a residence suffering from a stab wound. Hunt was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injury.

 

Detectives have determined the stabbing followed an interaction between Knott and Hunt.

Richmond Police detectives have identified the victim in the North Thompson Street homicide investigation as Joseph Hunt, 45, of Richmond.

Yesterday, at approximately 11:47 p.m., officers were called to the 00 block of North Thompson Street for the report of an assault. Officers arrived and located an adult male, Hunt, inside a residence suffering from a stab wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The investigation indicates the assault followed an interaction between the victim and another adult male. This investigation continues.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Motorcyclist Identified in Fatal Collision on South Belvidere Street

The Richmond Police Department Crash Team has identified the motorcyclist involved in the fatal collision on South Belvidere Street yesterday as Alexander Norton, 21, of North Chesterfield.

Yesterday at approximately 3:59 p.m., officers were called to the intersection of South Belvidere and Spring streets for the collision of a motorcycle and an SUV. The rider of the motorcycle, Norton, was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The adult male driver of the SUV was not injured and remained at the scene.

The Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Members of the RPD Crash Team responded to the scene and are investigating. Investigators determined the rider of the motorcycle disregarded a red signal and attempted to turn left onto South Belvidere Street from Spring Street when the southbound SUV turned left from South Belvidere Street into the intersection of Spring Street where the vehicles collided.

At this time, no charges have been filed.

Road Closures and No Parking for 2025 Richmond Marathon

The 2025 Allianz Richmond Marathon is just days away. Runners will take to city streets on Saturday, November 15. There will be numerous “No Parking” zones and street closures in effect as a result.

The Richmond Police Department is asking motorists and pedestrians to be aware of the many roads that will be closed across the city to accommodate the marathon. Vehicles parked along the racecourse will be towed to accommodate the event starting at 4 p.m., Friday, November 14.   

Please be aware of signs restricting parking and detours throughout the city starting at 9 p.m., Wednesday, November 12, and continuing through 3 p.m., Saturday, November 15.

RPD Command Staff Walk near Richmond Highway

WHAT:            Richmond Police Department Command Staff Community Walk

WHEN:            4 p.m., TODAY, November 12

WHERE:        The meeting location will be Dale Avenue and Glasgow Street near Richmond Highway.

Richmond Police Department command staff and Second Precinct officers will walk in Sector 213 with collaborating public safety partners to interact with residents and offer crime prevention tips. Sector 213 Lieutenant Warren Andorfer and participants will engage residents in the neighborhood and businesses along Richmond Highway to better understand their needs and hear their concerns and suggestions for improvements in public safety. Residents will receive crime prevention tips to combat illegal tire dumping and improve the quality of life.

BACKGROUND:    

This walk is part of a series as the RPD Command Staff walks and talks with residents throughout the various city precincts, which has been a longstanding tradition of the department. The RPD is committed to cultivating opportunities for open dialogue and building relationships with citizens that extend beyond the response to emergencies.

Victim Identified in West Roanoke Street Homicide Investigation

Richmond Police detectives have identified the victim in the West Roanoke Street homicide investigation as Danielle Callahan, 41, of Richmond.

Yesterday morning, at approximately 12:48 a.m., officers responded to the 200 block of West Roanoke Street for the report of a person shot. Once on scene, officers located an adult female, Callahan, down and unresponsive. She had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Suspect Charged in West Cary Street Homicide Investigation

After Richmond Police detectives detained a possible suspect the evening following the shooting on West Cary Street two weeks ago, detectives have now charged the suspect.

After a grand jury indictment last week, Kordell Wall, 19, of Richmond, has been charged with murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His booking photo is not yet available.

At approximately 4:29 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29, officers were called to the 1400 block of West Cary Street for the report of a person shot. Officers arrived and located an adult male, Kwaivon Dejesus, 36, of Richmond, outside of a church suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation indicates the shooting followed an altercation between the victim and Wall.

Arrest Made in Coalter Street Homicide Investigation

Richmond Police detectives, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force, have made an arrest in connection with the homicide that occurred in May on Coalter Street.

On November 6, detectives arrested Adwin Zuri, 38, of Charles City.

He has been charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His booking photo is attached. 

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, officers were called to the 1300 block of Coalter Street for the report of a shooting. Officers arrived and located an adult male, Terrance Smith, 43, of Richmond, inside a residence suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Smith succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Driver Identified in Fatal Single Vehicle Crash on Powhite Parkway

The Richmond Police Department Crash Team is investigating a fatal single vehicle crash that occurred on the Powhite Parkway.

On Saturday at approximately 1:46 a.m., officers were called to the northbound lanes of the Powhite Parkway near the Douglasdale Road exit for the single vehicle crash. Officers arrived and found the damaged vehicle which had collided with the guiderail on the right side of the roadway. The male driver, Stephen Lomax, 41, of Henrico, was pronounced dead at the scene. An adult female passenger was transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not considered life threatening.

The Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Members of the RPD Crash Team responded to the scene and are investigating.

The northbound lanes of the roadway were closed for several hours to accommodate the investigation.

Victim Identified in West Bacon Street Homicide Investigation

Richmond Police detectives have identified the victim in the West Bacon Street homicide investigation as Edguin Zelaya-Mendez, 18, of Alexandria, VA.

On Saturday, at approximately 3:24 a.m., officers were responding to a loud noise complaint at an apartment complex located at West Bacon and Hickory streets when they heard gunfire in the parking lot. As many people who had been gathered there fled the area, officers entered the parking lot and located an adult male, Zelaya-Mendez, down and unresponsive next to a parked vehicle. He had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
