Arrest Made in North 21st Street Homicide

Richmond Police detectives have arrested a man in connection with a homicide that occurred Tuesday in the city’s East End.

At approximately 5:26 p.m. on June 24, officers were called to the 800 block of North 21st Street for a report of random gunfire. They arrived on scene within minutes and found Jay Q. Wood, 47, of the 3100 block of Zion Street, suffering from gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

Trevin K. Carter, 21, of the 5400 block of Montbrook Circle in Henrico County, surrendered to police on Saturday and has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder. His mugshot is attached.

Rosemont Road Homicide--Victim Identified/Vehicle Sought

Richmond Police detectives have identified yesterday’s homicide victim as Terry A. Mullins, 46, of the 500 block of Rosemont Road.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to Mullins’ home on Rosemont Road after a relative found him deceased inside the residence.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

Detectives are looking for the victim’s vehicle, a gold, 2007 Toyota Tacoma SR5 two-wheel drive with an extended cab. The vehicle has a temporary license plate with “13316X” as the tag number.

Detectives do not believe this crime was random and are following up on several leads.

Rosemont Road Homicide

Richmond Police detectives are now investigating this afternoon’s death on the Southside as a homicide.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. today, officers received a call for a suspicious death after an individual entered a home in the 500 block of Rosemont Road and found an adult male deceased inside. 

Right now detectives are working with the Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the victim, notify the next of kin and determine the cause of death.

Update--Orcutt Lane Homicide

Richmond Police detectives have identified the man killed last night on the Southside as Traelle N. Johnson, 25, of the 5800 block of Orcutt Lane.

At approximately 11 p.m. Tuesday, officers received calls for random gunfire and a shooting in the 5800 block of Orcutt Lane.

Officers arrived on scene within minutes and found Johnson outside suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to VCU Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Richmond Police detectives are in the early stages of a homicide investigation in the East End and have identified the victim as Jay Q. Wood, 47, of the 3100 block of Zion Street.

Richmond Police detectives are in the early stages of a homicide investigation on the city’s Southside. 

At approximately 11 p.m. Tuesday, officers received calls for random gunfire and a shooting in the 5800 block of Orcutt Lane.

Arrest Made for Child Neglect

Arrest Made for Child Neglect

The Richmond Police Department has arrested the mother of a child found wandering alone on West Broad Street three times since Friday.

Detectives arrested Michelle L. Knighten, 39, of the 100 block of West Broad Street and charged her with felony child neglect. Her photo is attached.

On Friday, officers were called to the 100 block of West Broad Street twice for reports of a 4-year-old boy wandering alone. On both occasions officers returned the child to the mother unharmed. Officers believed the first incident was the result of a distracted mother and the second incident was the result of Knighten suffering from a medical condition. Knighten was transported for treatment and the boy was placed in the custody of his father. Child Protective Services were notified after both incidents and responded.

No charges were placed.

Yesterday morning, officers were called to the scene again and found the same boy alone on West Broad Street. CPS was notified again.


Detectives consulted with officers, the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and other city agencies today and it was decided that Knighten be arrested and charged.

Update--Hull Street Death Investigation

Richmond Police detectives have identified the man who died last night as Dominique S. Mangram, 26, of the 5600 block of Petoskey Avenue.

At approximately 2:42 p.m. Monday, officers were called to the 5700 block of Hull Street for a report of a person shot. When they arrived, they found two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both were taken to the hospital where Mangram later succumbed to his injuries. The second victim, a 21-year-old male, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Bramblewood Estates Walk Through

Chief Ray J. Tarasovic and the Department’s Command Staff will join Third Precinct Sector 312 Lt. John Garcia for a walk through Bramblewood Estates tomorrow afternoon.

Officers will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Yellowpine Circle off of Jahnke Road, and spread out through the neighborhood from there. 

They will talk with residents about crime trends in the area and focus on building stronger relationships and civic engagement with citizens.

Command Staff members and officers will also talk safety tips, including preventing thefts from motor vehicles. They will also ask what residents would like to see more of from Richmond Police.

Hull Street Death Investigation

Richmond Police detectives are now investigating the shooting of two men today as a death investigation after one of the victims succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

At approximately 2:42 p.m. today, officers were called to the 5700 block of Hull Street for a report of a person shot. They arrived on scene within minutes and found two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds. Both men were taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment. One victim died of his injuries around 8 p.m. while the second victim’s injuries are not life threatening.

Because the investigation is still on going and detectives are working to notify the victim’s next of kin, they are not yet identifying him or releasing any further details about the incident.

Suspect Still Sought in Officer Assault 

Richmond Police detectives are making a second request for information from the public to help locate Daejshon-terrique Blizzard, the driver who struck and injured officers at a traffic stop last week.

Detectives believe there is a possibility Blizzard has returned to the Richmond area.

Blizzard, 21, of the 3200 block of Chamberlayne Avenue, is a black male who is approximately five feet seven inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. His photo is attached.

At approximately 3:15 a.m., Tuesday, June 10, officers attempted to stop Blizzard for a moving violation in the 1600 block of Lamb Avenue. Blizzard turned the vehicle and struck the officers. Blizzard ran from the scene on foot.

The vehicle Blizzard was driving was impounded for the investigation. Detectives believe Blizzard is now possibly driving a white Ford Explorer.

Information Sought on Injured Man

The Richmond Police Department is currently seeking information from anyone who may have seen a man who was found injured last Friday morning.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on June 13, Hussein Salih, 23, was found at the intersection of Cedar and East Marshall streets suffering from a significant head injury. He was transported to VCU Medical Center. Salih is six feet tall and weighs 170 pounds. His photo is attached.

Detectives are seeking information from those who had seen or interacted with Salih on the evening and morning in question. He is believed to have patronized several establishments in Shockoe Bottom before walking from the area and being found injured.

CVS Robbery Suspect Sought

The Richmond Police Department needs the public’s help to identify a man who robbed a CVS store at gunpoint this weekend.

Just before 9 p.m. on Friday, June 13, a man walked into the CVS at 6807 Forest Hill Ave. and robbed an employee at gunpoint. He stole money and prescription drugs. No one was injured during the crime.

The robber can be seen in the attached surveillance image.

BACKGROUND: The Richmond Police Department is proud to recognize two regional K-9 teams who will be graduating after an intense 14-week K-9 patrol training course.

The training included obedience, tracking, building searches, aggression control and detection work as well as bonding with each other.

K-9 Officer Wes Moore will graduate with his new partner, K-9 Diesel, a 3-year-old Czech Shepherd from the Czech Republic.

Hanover County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Hallock will graduate with his new partner, K-9 Loki, a 3-year-old Czech Shepard from the Czech Republic. 

“These officers and K-9s have worked hard together these past 14 weeks to become a strong training team designed to find suspects and evidence in ways our regular patrol officers cannot,” Major Crimes Major Steve Drew said.

“I’m so proud of their dedication and commitment.”


Next month, Richmond Police Sgt. Michael Bohannon will graduate from the same training with new K-9 Astro.

Arrest Made in Mosby Robbery/Shooting

Arrest Made in Mosby Robbery/Shooting 
Richmond Police have made an arrest in a robbery and shooting that occurred in the Mosby neighborhood last month.

With the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s Regional Fugitive Task Force, detectives arrested Marquez R. Taylor, 21, of the 1600 block of Glenfield Avenue without incident. His photo is attached. He has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, probation violation and trespassing for a shooting incident that occurred in the 1400 block of Coalter Street on May 18. Additional charges are pending.

Robbery Suspect Sought

The Richmond Police Department needs the public’s help to identify a man who robbed a convenience store and was then seen panhandling in the same area afterward.

At approximately 11 p.m. on Monday, June 2, a man walked into the Exxon station at 7100 Patterson Ave. and robbed the business.

Though there are no surveillance images of the incident, the same man was also seen panhandling in the area for several days after the robbery.

The man is described as a white male, 5’9” to 5’-11” feet tall, weighing 180 to 200 pounds and in his mid- to late-40s. He had a mustache and may have a scraggly beard now, as well as salt and pepper hair. He may be homeless and was last seen wearing green sweat pants, a grey Mt Bike baseball cap, sunglasses and his name may be “Ray.”

Recognize This Fraud Suspect?

The Richmond Police Department needs the public’s help to identify the woman in a surveillance video who used a stolen credit card to buy more than $2,000 in gift cards.

On March 6, the woman went to the Wal-Mart on Sheila Lane and used the fraudulent card to purchase dozens of gift cards totaling approximately $2,000.

Arrest made in Shooting of Child

Richmond Police detectives have arrested and charged a man in connection with the shooting of a 23-month-old child on Sunday.

At approximately 10 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, officers were called to a residence in the 1400 block of Harwood Street and found a female child who had been shot. Her injuries were not life threatening and she has since been treated and released from the hospital.

Today, thanks to tips from the community and good investigative work, officers were able to identify a suspect who surrendered to police this evening.

He has been identified as Dontrell M. Mason, 21, of the 2100 block of Mimosa Street. Mason has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and additional charges are pending. His mugshot is attached.

BACKGROUND:     Members of the Department’s 109th Basic Recruit Class, Richmond Police personnel and members of other area law enforcement agencies will participate in the Torch Run’s Capitol Leg, a 4.7-mile stretch west from the State Capitol to Fountain Lake in Byrd Park.

Richmond Police also will participate in the Torch Run’s Final Leg, starting 8 p.m., Friday, at the Tuckahoe Rescue Squad and ending at the University of Richmond Robins Center for the start of the Special Olympics games, which the Torch Run benefits.

“It is an honor to run the course following the Special Olympic torch,” said Captain Harvey Powers, the Department’s Torch Run coordinator. “That torch symbolizes the courage, determination and effort of Special Olympic athletes everywhere.”

This year marks a new course and destination for the participants. “We wanted to bring the torch and the spirit it represents to more people,” Captain Powers said. “This year our route takes us through Carytown before turning on Boulevard to conclude at Fountain Lake. The torch’s new course will provide many people with a vivid reminder of the resolve and inspiration of the athletes and the Games.”

This year law enforcement agencies in Virginia have raised over one million dollars to fund the important missions of Special Olympics.

Victim Identified in East Hill Street Homicide

Victim Identified in East Hill Street Homicide Richmond Police have identified the victim from last night’s homicide as Lyle P. McMurtray, 23, of the 100 block of Easy Street, Dutton, Virginia. At approximately 9 p.m. yesterday, officers received a call for a person down in a vehicle in the 100 block of East Hill Street. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive male inside a white SUV parked on the block. The victim had suffered what appeared to be a gunshot wound and was dead at the scene. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
