Richmond Police Welcomes New YAPC Members

WHAT:
Young Adult Police Commissioners Swearing-In Ceremony

WHEN:
3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11

WHERE:
Richmond Police Training Academy, 1202 W. Graham Road

BACKGROUND:
Chief Bryan T. Norwood created the Young Adult Police Commission in 2009 soon after his arrival in Richmond as a positive vehicle for teenagers to become involved with Richmond Police with a strategy-building focus.

Since that time, the group of select high school students, known as Young Adult Police Commissioners, has participated in community service programs, including feeding the homeless and sponsoring teen forums, to contribute to the Department’s community policing philosophy.

Members are recommended for participation with YAPC by their peers and school administrators and must undergo an extensive interview process prior to selection. Ten teens will be sworn in at Thursday’s ceremony, joining the 17 current commissioners.

The demonstrated leadership of past YAPC members boasts a 100 percent college acceptance rate, with most ranking in the top 10 percent of their high school class.

Members of the media and the public are invited to attend the Young Adult Police Commissioners Swearing-In Ceremony.
