RPD Invites Media to Badging of New Mounted Unit Member

February 7, 2019

WHAT:                   Badging ceremony for new member of the RPD Mounted Unit

WHEN:                   1:30 p.m., Friday, February 8

WHERE:                 RPD Mounted Unit Stables – 1201 Brook Road

BACKGROUND:     The Richmond Police Department would like to invite the media to the badging of Aslan, the newest member of the Mounted Unit.  This comes after Rio, the former RPD Mounted Unit leader, retired back in December.

Aslan is a 3 ½ year old Percheron/Thoroughbred Cross horse from Asbury University, located outside Lexington, Kentucky.  Two officers of the RPD Mounted Unit went to Asbury University in late November and after testing a few horses, they agreed Aslan would make a good fit.

“Since I am the trainer for the unit, I have ridden and tested Aslan on the street,” said Officer Amanda Acuff, RPD Mounted Unit.  “He has performed very well, especially for a young horse.”

Before Aslan receives his badge on Friday, officers plan on running him through an obstacle course to showcase some of his skills and abilities.  Harold Rainwater, the director of the Asbury Equine Program, will be present.  The student trainer who worked with Aslan will also be there.
