More than 100 young people will converge on the Richmond Police Training Academy this Saturday, April 2, for a state competition among Police Explorers posts. The event is from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the culminating awards ceremony at 5:30 p.m.
“As home to Explorers Post 610, we are proud to host this competition to test the skills, knowledge and agility of young people who have shown an interest in policing,” Chief Bryan T. Norwood said. “Hopefully this inspiration will become a law enforcement career aspiration.”
The Virginia Law Enforcement Explorers Association, of which Richmond Police is a member, holds the competition to test members of Police Explorers posts from jurisdictions across the state in four areas: Active Shooter Response, Unknown Risk Traffic Stop, Officer Down Rescue and a Police Exam. The explorers also will take on an obstacle course set up for the event. In addition to members of Richmond Police Explorers Post 610, explorers from Virginia Beach, Petersburg and Danville are expected to participate.
Richmond Police Explorers Post 610, which operates on a rank structure similar to law enforcement and the military, is a worksite-based program of Learning for Life, a subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America, for young men and women ages 14 to 20. The program is designed to provide career opportunities, mentoring and life skills, with an emphasis on exploring professions in policing.
“Through Explorers I get to see what an officer really does. I see Richmond Police trying to help the community,” said Explorers Captain Franklin Martin, who attends George Wythe High. “I’ve always wanted be a police officer when I grow up. Now I see that’s really possible.”

Richmond Police to Host Special Easter Egg Hunt
Bomb Squad Makes Beeping Eggs for Visually Impaired Children
The eggs children hunt for during the Easter season don’t usually chirp, much less beep. But this year the Richmond Police Bomb Squad wanted to make sure children who are visually impaired had the chance to enjoy an Easter egg hunt, too.
Instead of taking apart a device that beeps, this time the Bomb Squad used their technical talents to put together dozens of beeping Easter eggs.
“Usually we rotate duties for Bomb Squad callouts and wait to see whose number is up,” said Master Police Officer Mark Castillo. “For this project though, we didn’t have any problem getting volunteers. Bomb Squad members pitched in to construct 125 beeping eggs.”
The beeping eggs will make their debut at an egg hunt scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at E. Claiborne Robins Stadium on the campus of the University of Richmond. Children will receive prizes for eggs they find during the hunt. There also will be egg decorating for children to create a souvenir egg from the event, along with crafts and face painting.
The Bomb Squad partnered with the Virginia Association for Parents of Children with Visual Impairments for the event. “We are expecting about 20 to 30 children from the association to participate, but we welcome area children who are visually impaired to also participate,” Castillo said.

ATM Robbery Suspect Sought
Richmond Police investigators need the public’s help to identify and find the man pictured below who robbed another man at gunpoint at an ATM.
Just after midnight on Jan. 5, the victim pulled his vehicle up to the Wachovia ATM at
The suspect was last seen standing at the ATM. He is described as a black male with a brown complexion in his mid-30s, about 5’7” and weighing about 165 pounds. He was wearing a ski mask which covered the lower half of his face.

Outdoor Roll Call - Fourth Precinct
Join Lieutenant Hamlet Hood and Fourth Precinct officers for an Outdoor Roll Call today at 3:45 p.m.
Officers are briefed each day regarding wanted subjects, recent activity in their sectors, upcoming community meetings, and more. This afternoon the Fourth Precinct’s evening shift will hold their roll call out in the community.
Outdoor Roll Calls provide a strong, visible police presence that also encourages neighbors and business owners to interact with officers and supervisors. It is an opportunity to discuss ideas, concerns and the strategies of community policing.
“In speaking with business owners in the area, the problems that have been identified can best be addressed by community involvement and officer visibility,” said Lieutenant Hood. “This Outdoor Roll Call will move us closer to removing the visible aspects of crime from the downtown streets.”
Officers will gather at 3:45 p.m. at Second and Marshall streets. After the meeting, the officers assigned to that area will walk in the neighborhood and engage citizens.

Suspicious Situation
The Richmond Police Department is currently investigating a suspicious situation involving two missing persons and a vehicle.
Department investigators are searching for Evande Orna, 39, and Troy Edwards, 40, both of Plainfield, New Jersey.
They were last seen in Plainfield en route to Richmond. They were driving a 2011 Nissan Altima, 4-door, silver in color, bearing a New Jersey tag YXE-62E. The vehicle and tag information was a subject of a public advisory yesterday. Those images are also attached.
Investigators are working with other jurisdictions in hopes of finding some information regarding Evande Orna, Troy Edwards or the vehicle. Detectives have reason to believe the two may be victims of foul play.
