Redd Street Homicide and Arrest

A man shot during a robbery Friday night on Redd Street has died of his injuries.

Gary S. Green, 41, of Henrico, died this morning. He and another man were robbed at gunpoint by two unknown males at approximately 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, in the 1900 block of Redd Street. During the crime, one of the robbers shot Green.

The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Russell L. Johnson, 28, of the 600 block of Hancock Street, late Saturday evening and charged him with conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit malicious wounding and use of a firearm during the commission of a robbery.

Berrywood Road Death Investigation

The Richmond Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Friday.

Shortly before 10 p.m., officers responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence at 5720 Berrywood Road. There they found Robin A. Mitchell, 42, of the same address, dead of a gunshot wound.

A male companion of Ms. Mitchell’s, who was present when the shooting occurred, was questioned by detectives.

Forensics technicians processed the scene.

Detectives will review the evidence and the statements made by the male companion with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to determine if any charges will be filed.

Police Investigating Robbery-Assault on Video

The Richmond Police Department needs the public’s help identifying and locating the persons responsible for a robbery/assault in Shockoe Bottom.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, in the 1700 block of East Cary Street.

A video on YouTube – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDbuke4dSzE – shows a male being attacked by several other males. The victim’s wallet was taken during the struggle.

4th Quarter Awards Ceremony

The flames were fierce and the smoke was choking, but Fourth Precinct Sgt. David Naoroz ran into a burning home twice on Nov. 18 to help save an elderly woman from a late-night fire.

For his heroic actions, he was awarded the Richmond Police Department’s highest honor -- the Medal of Honor – during the Department’s quarterly awards ceremony on Jan. 24.

Sgt. Jean-Guy LeGouffe and Officer Jill Simons also received the Life Saving Award for their role in those rescue efforts.

Chief Bryan T. Norwood recognized the Precinct of the Year: Second Precinct; Sector of the Year: Sector 212; and Rookie of the Year: First Precinct's Officer Mary Gary for their contributions to reducing crime, building partnerships and improving relationships within the community.

“It’s these partnerships – that aspect of bringing the community into community policing – that’s making a difference in our city,” Chief Norwood said. “We want to recognize and thank these partners and also our officers on the streets every day who work to go above and beyond their required duties and give their best back to the residents of Richmond.”

Arrest Made in Hillside Shootings

Richmond Police have arrested a man wanted in connection with two shootings—one fatal—in Hillside Court this week.

Deandre Rayseem Yellardy, 19, the 1600 block of Glenfield Avenue, surrendered to police early this morning. He was wanted for attempted murder in connection with the incident, which occurred in the 1400 block of Harwood Street just after 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Arrest Made in Southlawn Avenue Homicides

Richmond Police investigators have arrested and charged Ivan A. “Slap” Smith in connection with a pair of New Year’s Day homicides in the city.

Smith, 29, of the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike, was arrested yesterday and charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder.

Investigators were called to the 1700 block of Southlawn Avenue just after 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 for a report of shots fired. When they arrived they found Alex R. Arrington Jr., 25, shot to death outside and Coraliss A. Logan, 25, shot to death inside a vehicle a block away.

Investigators worked around the clock on this case and credit tips from the community for helping to make the arrest.
