The Richmond Police Department is investigating a collision that occurred yesterday afternoon between a Richmond school bus and a sport utility vehicle. It happened approximately 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Belmont Road and West Belmont Road.
Karl Anthony McClendon, 46, of the 1700 block of Jacquelin Street, a passenger in the sport utility vehicle, died at the scene. The driver of that vehicle and four other passengers, ranging in age from infant to adult, were taken to VCU Medical Center for medical evaluations. Any injuries they may have suffered were not believed to be serious.
The school bus was carrying six students from Albert Hill Middle School. Neither they nor the bus driver were injured.
The intersection was closed to through traffic for more than four hours so the Department’s Crash Team could map the scene. The team has determined that the driver of the school bus was attempting a left turn onto Belmont Road northbound from West Belmont Road when it collided with the sport utility vehicle, which was traveling southbound on Belmont Road.
No charges will be filed until the Crash Team has completed its investigation and presented its findings to the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
