 WHAT:            Chief Rick Edwards warns of the dangers of shooting recklessly on New Years Eve and highlights the investigations, arrests and convictions that have occurred in the past two years.

Media is invited to join Chief Rick Edwards as he advises the public about the peril when individuals recklessly shoot on New Years Eve. Insight into the investigations will be shared, and the five arrests and convictions resulting from those investigations by RPD detectives will be highlighted. Gunshot detection technology will be discussed. This technology which pinpoints locations where shootings occur and advances police response and assists investigations.

 Pedestrian Identified in Fatal Collision on East Broad Street

The Richmond Police Department Crash Team has identified the pedestrian involved in the fatal collision on East Broad Street as William Martin, 71, of Richmond.

Yesterday at approximately 12:03p.m., officers were called to the intersection of East Broad and North 10th streets for the report of a vehicle colliding into a pedestrian.

Officers arrived and found an adult male, Martin, down and injured in the eastbound lanes of East Broad Street. The driver of the vehicle that struck Martin remained at the scene. Martin was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were considered life-threatening. Today, he succumbed to his injuries.

The RPD Crash Team responded to the scene to investigate. They have determined an adult male driver of the vehicle made a left turn from North 10th Street onto the eastbound lanes of East Broad Street and struck Martin while he was in the crosswalk. Charges are pending for the driver of the vehicle.

The investigation continues.

Victim Identified in Hull Street Road Homicide Investigation

Yesterday at approximately 8:57 p.m., Richmond Police Department officers were called to the 2700 block of Hull Street Road for the report of a domestic disturbance. The call was soon updated to a shooting call. Officers arrived and located an adult female, Porshia Williams, 34, of Richmond, inside of a structure down and unresponsive. She had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Detectives with the RPD Major Crimes unit are investigating and are attempting to locate a known male believed to have been at the scene.

Fatal Vehicle–Pedestrian Collision on Hull Street Road

Yesterday at approximately 6:54 p.m., officers were called to the 5700 block of Hull Street Road for the report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian. Officers arrived and found an adult male down and unresponsive in the roadway. He was transported to a local hospital where yesterday he succumbed to his injuries.

The RPD Crash Team responded to the scene and determined that the male was not in a crosswalk and was walking in the center of Hull Street Road when a vehicle being operated westbound struck him. The driver stayed on scene.

The investigation continues.

Victim Identified in Spotsylvania Street Homicide Investigation

 


Richmond Police detectives have identified the victim in the Spotsylvania Street homicide investigation as Dameon Felix, 20, of Richmond.


At approximately 11:56 p.m., Sunday, December 21, officers responded to the 1600 block of Spotsylvania Street after the gunshot detection system reported a gunfire alert. Officers arrived and located an adult male, Felix, down on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

 

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Fatal Pedestrian Collision Under Investigation on Green Acres Avenue


The Richmond Police Department Crash Team is investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred in the 100 block of Green Acres Avenue. 

At approximately 5:53 p.m., Friday, December 19, a call for service was received for a male lying in the grass near the 100 block Green Acres Avenue. An adult male was located down on the ground unresponsive. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. 

The RPD Crash Team responded to the scene and determined that the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound in the 100 block of Green Acres Avenue. This investigation continues.

WHAT:            Richmond Police Department Command Staff Community Walk

 

WHEN:            4 p.m., TODAY, December 17

 

WHERE:          The meeting location will be the 1300 block of Idlewood Avenue in the Randolph                             Community

 

Richmond Police Department command staff and Third Precinct officers will walk in Sector 313 with collaborating public safety partners to interact with residents and offer crime prevention tips. 313 Sector Lieutenant Cynthia Marlowe and participants will engage residents to better understand their needs and hear their concerns and suggestions for improvements in public safety. Residents will receive crime prevention tips to combat theft from motor vehicles.

 

BACKGROUND:    

This walk is part of a series as the RPD Command Staff walks and talks with residents throughout the various city precincts, which has been a longstanding tradition of the department. The RPD is committed to cultivating opportunities for open dialogue and building relationships with citizens that extend beyond the response to emergencies.

Yesterday at approximately 7:07 p.m., officers were called to the 2300 block of Fairfield Avenue for the report of a shooting. Officers arrived and located an adult male, Travis Logan-Baker, 35, of Richmond, inside of a residence down on the floor suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Four Juveniles Arrested for Multiple Vehicles Damaged in First Precinct

 

Officers with Richmond Police Department’s First Precinct arrested four juveniles early Sunday morning after being called to the scene of vehicle vandalisms and thefts from motor vehicles.

 

On Sunday at approximately 1:34 a.m., a member of the public called police when observing several juveniles who were damaging multiple vehicles in the 1500 block of North 31st Street. This scenario matched two other incidents featured in an RPD advisory on Friday, which alerted the public to multiple vehicles damaged and thefts from motor vehicles in eastern Richmond.

 

Following the call for service, First Precinct patrol officers rapidly responded and located the juveniles. Officers engaged in short foot pursuits and apprehended all four suspects. Detectives believe there may be a connection between these suspects and the earlier incidents and are actively investigating.

 

Among items seized from the suspects were two window punches – handheld devices used to shatter vehicle windows. Detectives are in consultation with the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney regarding charges for the four juvenile males, ages 15, 16, 17 and 17, of Richmond.

 

“I not only applaud First Precinct patrol for their rapid and effective response – but I thank the public for reporting these incidents and the media for sharing this information,” said RPD Chief Rick Edwards. “When we all take responsibility for public safety – it leads to a safer Richmond for all.”

Multiple Vehicles Damaged in Two Incidents in First Precinct


Richmond Police Department detectives are investigating two incidents of damage to multiple parked vehicles in First Precinct.

 

This morning at approximately 3:45 a.m., officers were called to an apartment parking lot in the 400 block of North 18th Street for the report of several vehicles damaged. Officers arrived and found 33 vehicles with smashed driver’s windows. Contents in the vehicle had been ransacked and items had been stolen from multiple cars.

 

Yesterday at approximately 5:20 a.m., officers were called to an apartment parking lot in the 2200 block of East Cary Street for the report of several vehicles damaged. Officers arrived and found 26 vehicles with smashed driver’s windows. Contents in the vehicle had been ransacked and items had been stolen from multiple cars. Detectives have determined the vandalism and thefts from motor vehicles in this incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m.

 

Detectives are seeking photos and videos from surveillance cameras from the properties and nearby to identify suspect(s). Patrol officers have been notified and will continue robust patrols.

Pedestrian Identified in Fatal Collision on West Carnation Street

 

The Richmond Police Department Crash Team has identified the pedestrian involved in the fatal collision on West Carnation Street last Saturday as Lauren Jones, 40, of Richmond.

 

At approximately 5:30 p.m., Saturday, November 29, officers were called to the 6000 block of West Carnation Street for the report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian. Officers arrived and found an adult female, Jones, down and unresponsive in the roadway. She was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

 

The RPD Crash Team responded to the scene and interviewed the driver of the striking vehicle, who had remained at the scene. Investigators have determined Jones was in the roadway when struck by the vehicle.

 

The RPD Crash Team continues to investigate. At this time, no charges have been filed.

At approximately 3:28 p.m., Friday, November 28, officers were called to the 1800 block of R Street for the report of a shooting. Officers arrived and located a 15-year-old juvenile male, down on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
