Suspect Sought in Package Theft

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the suspect in the photo who stole a package from a porch yesterday.

At approximately 12:55 p.m., the man in the photo and video is seen walking in the 2500 block of Floyd Avenue when he spots an unattended package on a porch. The suspect walks up the steps, covers the package with his jacket and walks away.

RPD Promotes Safety for Places of Worship

Mosques, churches, synagogues and all places of worship should be havens from the chaos of life. Safety is paramount and adopting a few simple procedures can dramatically increase the security of these sanctuaries and help to protect the people within and the surrounding property.

The Richmond Police Department will be hosting a safety and awareness forum for religious gathering places. The forum will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, October 30. A variety of topics will be discussed, including general safety, preparing for an emergency, firearms in places of worship and pastoral protection.

The forum is free, but registration is required to accommodate all attendees. Registration will take place on-site before the event from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Early registration is also available online. Congregations are invited to send no more than four representatives.

Victim Identified in Powell Road Homicide

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim in the Powell Road homicide.

On Sunday, at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers were called to the 2500 block of Powell Road for a report of a person down in the street. Officers arrived and found Mark A. Jefferson, 28, of the 900 block of Kingsway Road, unresponsive in the roadway who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Powell Road Homicide

The Richmond Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred this morning.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., officers were called to the 2500 block of Powell Road for a report of a person down in the street. Officers arrived and located a male unresponsive in the roadway who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Forensics detectives are collecting evidence and major crimes detectives are canvassing the area for information.

Museum District Community Walk

WHAT:           Richmond Police Department Community Walk

WHEN:          5:30 p.m. today, October 20, 2015

WHERE:        3100 block of Ellwood Avenue


Chief Alfred Durham and the Department’s Command Staff will join Third Precinct Sector 311 Lt. Michael Stith for a walk through the Museum District this evening.

Officers will meet at the above location and spread out from there to converse with residents about their safety concerns and what they would like to see more of from the Richmond Police Department.

“We have experienced several incidents of thefts from motor vehicles in this area,” Lt. Stith said. “Meeting with citizens in a walkthrough will give us a chance to remind everyone of prevention tips that can dramatically decrease these crimes of opportunity.”

This event is an occasion to connect with neighbors and better focus the Richmond Police Department’s efforts in the area. It is the latest in a series of monthly community walks conducted by the Richmond Police Department in neighborhoods throughout the city.

Members of the media are encouraged to attend.

Victim Identified in Hunt Avenue Homicide

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim from Saturday’s homicide in the Providence Park neighborhood.

At approximately 9:21 p.m., officers were called to the 300 block of Hunt Avenue for a report of shots fired. Officers arrived and found Muhammed Abu-Bakr, 57, of the 2700 block of Delmont Avenue, unresponsive in the roadway. He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Suspect Sought in Theft from Firehouse

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the suspect in the photos who stole an electronic device from a firehouse last week.

At approximately 3:05 p.m., the man in the photos rode his bicycle up to Fire Station #17, located at 2211 Semmes Ave., just after firefighters had left on a call for service. The suspect entered through an unlocked rear door and stole an electronic device belonging to a city employee.

The suspect left through the same door, mounted the bicycle in the photo and rode away.

He is described as a black male, 20-30 years of age, approximately six feet tall and weighing 220 pounds. He has a beard and dreadlocks and was wearing a t-shirt with the Lowe’s logo.

Martin’s Tour of Richmond Traffic Advisory

The Martin’s Tour of Richmond will roll through the city and surrounding counties tomorrow. Numerous intermittent road closures will be in effect as a result.

Cyclists will start at the Richmond Raceway Complex in Henrico County as early as 7:30 a.m., and the course is expected to close at 6 p.m. Riders will pass through several Richmond neighborhoods, including parts of Northside, Highland Park, southside and the Downtown area.

Suspect Sought in Commercial Robbery on Jahnke Road

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the man in the attached photos and video (sent separately) who is a suspect in a commercial robbery that occurred this morning.

At approximately 3:25 a.m., an unknown male entered the 7-Eleven store located at 6209 Jahnke Road, displayed a handgun and demanded the money from the register. The suspect took cash and fled on foot. 

The suspect is described as a 6-foot-2-inch tall, black male with a slim build, who was last seen wearing gloves, a baseball cap, a red bandanna over his face, sunglasses, a black hoodie and black sweat pants.

Missing Person Sought

The Richmond Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing man, Adam J. Cruz. Cruz suffers from mental health issues for which he is prescribed several medications. His photo is attached.

Cruz, 27, of the 3400 block of Chamberlayne Avenue, has been missing for several days.

Cruz is a black male, six feet tall and approximately 250 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He walks with a slight limp.

Cruz may be wearing women’s clothing. He has been known to answer to the name, “Chelsea”.

Victim Identified in Fatal Crash on Hull Street

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim in a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred early this morning on Hull Street.

At approximately 12:59 a.m., a motorcycle traveling westbound on Hull Street crossed into the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with a utility pole near the intersection of East 1st Street. The driver, John R. Bishop, 52, of the 5000 block of Oriole Avenue in North Chesterfield, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suspect Sought in Two Commercial Break-Ins

 Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the man in the attached photos who is a suspect in two commercial break-ins that occurred last month.

At approximately 2:15 a.m. on September 16, officers were called to an auto service center in the 3600 block of Jefferson Davis Highway for a report of a break-in. Surveillance video showed a heavyset, light-skinned, bald black male with a beard force entry through a garage door.

Once inside, he unsuccessfully attempted to gain access to drawers in the office before apparently being frightened away by an alarm. Nothing was taken from the business, and the suspect fled from the premises.

Detectives believe that, about a week prior, the same suspect also broke into a convenience store in the 100 block of Belt Boulevard. Between the early morning hours of September 8 and the morning of September 9, he is believed to have forced entry to the business and taken clothing.

Victim Identified in Redd Street Homicide

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim in this morning’s Redd Street homicide investigation.

At approximately 2:19 a.m., officers were called to the 1900 block of Redd Steet for the report of a person down. Officers arrived and found William E. Crutchfield, 34, of the 1900 block of Redd Street, in a residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He died at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Suspects Sought in Convenience Store Robbery

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the three people in the attached photos who are suspects in a robbery this morning.

At approximately 2:03 a.m., a female entered the FasMart convenience store, located at 2107 Semmes Avenue, and was quickly joined by two males. The female left the store while one of the males brandished a handgun and the other male stole cash from the register.

The male suspects fled on foot towards Semmes Avenue. The female, believed to be involved, was seen driving a Nissan four-door vehicle white in color.

There were no injuries.
