RPD Phone Scam Alert

July 11, 2020

The Richmond Police Department is investigating reports of a telephone scam that involves someone trying to get money under false pretenses.

Earlier this week, several citizens reported receiving calls from someone posing as RPD personnel. The scammer stated they were from the Department’s Warrants and Information Section and claimed the citizen had a warrant on file.  They added names of police personnel to make it look authentic.  The call stated that you could pay the fee via voucher.

“The Richmond Police Department will never call you asking for money,” said Community, Youth, and Intervention Services Capt. F. Flippo. “We want to remind citizens to never provide their credit card information over the phone and to report any suspicious phone calls.”

If you receive a call like this or a similar one, please call the RPD’s non-emergency line at (804) 646-5100 to report it.
