The Richmond Police Department’s Crash Team investigators
have identified the person who was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Jeff Davis
Highway early this morning as Kevin Wilson of the 3600 block of Brandywine
Drive, Hopewell, VA.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m. in a
northbound lane of Jeff Davis Highway. Wilson was driving a vehicle that
was struck from behind as it was stopped at the red light at the intersection
with Terminal Road by another vehicle travelling northbound.
The force of the collision caused Wilson’s vehicle to catch
fire and then strike a nearby utility pole, trapping him inside. A witness
attempted a rescue but was driven back by the intense heat. He told
investigators Wilson appeared to be unconscious in the driver’s seat.
The Virginia Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause
and manner of Wilson’s death.
The driver of the striking vehicle left the scene on
foot.
Crash Team investigators have consulted with the
Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and charges will be filed once the other
driver is positively identified.
Several witnesses have been interviewed, but there may be
others who saw what happened. They are being asked to call Crash Team
Sergeant Berkley Eikenrenkoetter or contact Crime Stoppers at (804)
780-1000 or www.7801000.com
