Arrest of Shooting Suspect

Richmond Police made an arrest this afternoon in a shooting that occurred early this morning in the city’s Southside.
Robert Lee Payne, 58, of the 400 block of Deter Road is charged with aggravated assault, malicious wounding and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
A woman reported to Richmond Police she was shot by a known male at 2:30 a.m. inside a residence in the 400 block of Laveta Drive. The woman was taken to a local hospital by a relative. Her injury is not life threatening.
Investigating detectives attempted to locate the suspect at the Laveta Drive address. Contact was made with the suspect by telephone around 9 a.m. However, he would not come out of the house.
Richmond Police negotiators and the SWAT Team were called to the scene around noon to further negotiations. A perimeter was established around the house and traffic was limited in the area of Laveta Drive, Deter Road and German School Road for several hours.
