At approximately 1 p.m., the Richmond Police Department responded to a call of a vehicle accident at the intersection of East Byrd and South Ninth streets.

After an initial investigation by Department officers it has been determined that a box truck traveling south on South Ninth Street disregarded a red signal and struck a small bus that was crossing eastbound through the intersection at East Byrd Street. The bus, carrying children from a local club, upended and came to rest on its side.

The Richmond Fire Department and Richmond Ambulance Authority personnel responded along with Department officers and began transporting all 12 persons involved to local hospitals. Seven victims were transported to VCU Medical Center, three went to CJW Medical Center – Chippenham, and two were transported to Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital.

Department officers have charged the driver of the box truck, Christopher Blackwell, 20, of the 2000 block of Eastwood Ridge Drive in Moseley, Virginia, with disregarding a red light.

The south entrance to the Manchester Bridge was closed for just under three hours as the investigation was conducted.
