Barricade Situation Resolved

The Richmond Police Department has resolved a barricade situation that occurred in the Gilpin Court housing community.

Saturday night at approximately 7:15 p.m., officers were called to the 400 block of West Charity Street for the report of a domestic assault. Officers arrived and found an adult female suffering from a stab wound. She was transported to VCU Medical Center with injuries that are not considered life threatening.

Officers believed the man responsible was inside a residence. Officers set up a perimeter and after several attempts to make contact with the suspect the SWAT team made entry.

The suspect, an adult male, was found inside the residence suffering from self-inflicted wounds. He was taken to VCU Medical Center with injuries that are not considered life threatening.

Several roads in and around the housing complex were closed to accommodate the investigation.

North Hopkins Road Homicide Victim Identified; Arrest Made

Thanks to good investigative work and tips from the community, Richmond Police detectives have identified the victim of Monday’s homicide and made an arrest in the case.

At approximately 8:39 a.m. Monday, a passerby spotted the body of a deceased female in a ravine in the 3700 block of North Hopkins Road. After releasing descriptions of the victim’s tattoos, individuals contacted detectives Wednesday afternoon to identify the victim as Samantha Myers, 20, of the 1300 block of Evert Avenue.

After being interviewed by Detectives Ed Aeschlimann and David Burt, one of those individuals then confessed to killing Myers. That individual—Yvette L. Hairston, 40, of the same address as Myers--was subsequently charged with murder. A mugshot is not yet available.

Hairston and Myers are stepsisters and the motive for the crime appears to be an argument between the pair.

Major Crimes detectives worked tirelessly over the past three days canvassing the neighborhood for tips, following up on numerous leads and interviewing several individuals. They would also like to thank the community and members of the media for sharing the description of the victim that helped lead to her identification.

The Richmond Police Department now has an artist's sketch of the victim to release from the North Hopkins Road homicide. The sketch is below and attached.

Detectives hope the sketch and the photos of the victim’s tattoos will prompt a member of the public to help identify the victim.

Detectives describe the black female as in her late teens to early 20’s, four feet, 10 inches tall with a thin build and a buzz-style haircut.

She was wearing a grey T-shirt with the words "Free and Proud" on the front. The jersey she was also wearing is a Nike Philadelphia 76ers number ‘3’ Allen Iverson model.

The tattoo photos are below. They have been darkened to better show the tattoo letters. They are a tattoo on her left forearm, "Sammy G", tattoos on her right knuckles, "G-O-D’-S" and tattoos on the left knuckles, "G-I-F-T".

The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.

Indictment for West Graham Road Homicide

Indictment for West Graham Road Homicide

Willie Daquan Lee, 18, of the 3900 block of Chamberlayne Avenue, has been indicted for the murder of a Virginia Union University student that occurred on West Graham Road in February. His photo is attached.

Today, after several weeks of intensive investigation, Richmond Police Department Detective Amira Sleem presented the Department's case before the Multi-Jurisdictional Grand Jury, which resulted in several indictments, including four involving the shooting death of Kahron M. Lee, no relation.

On March 11, Willie Lee was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshal's Regional Fugitive Task Force and held on unrelated charges. Lee remains in custody.

The Virginia Union University Police Department's Investigative Division assisted in this investigation.

Willie Lee has been charged with first-degree murder, robbery and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The investigation is ongoing.

Street Closings, Restrictions for Monument 10K

The Richmond Police Department asks motorists to be mindful of runners, street closings and parking restrictions for the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K this Saturday. The events begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, with the Virginia 529 Kids Run. The first wave of the 10K steps off 8:30 a.m. near Broad and Harrison streets. The 10K’s finish line is on Franklin Street next to Monroe Park.

Logistics of the 10K will require numerous street closings and traffic pattern changes throughout the city beginning with parking restrictions starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 28. Restrictions and closures will continue until 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29.

Richmond Police reminds all 10K event participants and attendees to take advantage of parking in the decks near the start and finish lines and to not leave any items that may tempt would-be thieves in plain view in your vehicle, regardless of where you park.

Following are the Richmond Police closings and changes scheduled from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday:

·         Broad Street from Belvidere Street to Lombardy Street will be closed from 4 a.m. to noon. The recommended detour for westbound traffic on Broad is right on Belvidere, left on Leigh Street and left on Allen Avenue. The recommended detour for eastbound traffic on Broad is left on Allen, right on Leigh and right on Belvidere.

·         Kent will be closed from Wythe to Monument Avenue from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m.

·         Laurel Street will be closed from Main to Broad streets from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m.

·         Cathedral Place will be closed from Laurel to Shafer Ct from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m.

·         Harrison will be closed from Park to Marshall from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m.

·         Franklin Street will be closed from Laurel to Stuart Circle from 4 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. and from Lombardy to Harrison from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

·         Lombardy Street will be closed from Broad to Hanover Avenue from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

·         Chantilly will be closed from Monumental to Monument from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m.

·         Canal Street will be closed from Belvidere to 2^nd Street from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.

·         Park Avenue will be closed from Shafer to Lombardy from 3 a.m. to 2 p.m.

·         Exit ramp from Westbound I-195 to Belvidere will be closed from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

·         Hanover will be closed from Plum to Lombardy from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

·         Grace Street will be closed from Belvidere to Allen from 7 a.m. to noon.

·                  Monument Avenue will be closed from Staples Mill Road to Stuart Circle (Lombardy Street) from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The recommended detour for eastbound traffic is left on Staples Mill, right on Broad, left on Allen, right on Leigh and right on Belvidere. The recommended detour for westbound traffic is right on Belvidere, left on Leigh, left on Allen and right on Broad.

·         The Boulevard will be closed at Monument Avenue from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The recommended detour for northbound traffic is left on Park Avenue, right on Thompson Street to I-195. The recommended detour for southbound traffic is right on Grace Street, right on Thompson Street, left on Broad Street, left on Hamilton Street to I-195.

There will be many street closings for all north and south streets intersecting Monument Avenue and Franklin Street from Staples Mill Road to Belvidere Street. Motorists are strongly encouraged to use I-95 and I-195 to travel around the city.

In addition to the street closings, parking will be prohibited prior to and during the 10K on the following streets:

1 p.m. Friday, March 28, to 3 p.m. Saturday

·         Both sides of Franklin Street from Laurel to Belvidere

3 p.m. Friday, March 28, to noon Saturday

·         Both sides of Broad Street from Belvidere to Lombardy

·         Both sides of Franklin Street from Belvidere to Shafer

·         Both sides of Laurel Street from Grace to Cathedral

·         Southbound lanes of Belvidere from Broad to Main Street

4 a.m. to noon Saturday

·         Both sides of Monument Avenue from Stuart Circle to Staples Mill

·         Both sides of Franklin Street from Stuart Circle to Shafer

·         Both sides of Laurel Street from Cathedral to Main

·         Both sides of Park Avenue from Harrison to Linden

·         Both sides of Lombardy from Park to Monument

The Department is now investigating Monday's incident on North Hopkins Road as a homicide.

Detectives need the public's assistance to help identify the victim. She is described as a black female, 25-35 years of age with a thin build. The victim is approximately five feet five inches tall with a buzz-style haircut.

She was wearing a grey T-shirt with the words "Free and Proud" on the front and also a black Nike basketball jersey.

Family Dollar Robbery Suspects Sought

Family Dollar Robbery Suspects Sought

The Richmond Police Department needs the public’s help to identify the suspects in the armed robbery of a Family Dollar on Saturday.

At approximately 4:05 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, two men entered the Family Dollar at 1208 Westover Hills Blvd. and robbed the business at gunpoint.

The pair can be seen in the video clips. Detectives believe the robbers may have fled the scene in a newer model KIA, driven by a white female, which was last seen traveling west toward Forest Hill Avenue.

The Richmond Police Department has been working closely with organizers of two of the city's largest St. Patrick's Day events in order to provide safe and enjoyable festivities.
After review of last year's events and with two separate locations this year, the Department has made adjustments to its operation plan, including staffing levels.
We encourage citizens to come out and enjoy the festivities but ask all to be responsible and safe.

SunTrust Bank Robber Captured

SunTrust Bank Robber Captured

The Richmond Police Department has made an arrest for last week's robbery of a SunTrust bank.

Detectives were able to identify the suspect as Charles E. Jackson, 51, of the 3300 block of North Avenue. Yesterday morning a Fourth Precinct officer spotted Jackson walking near N. Ninth and Marshall streets and made the arrest without incident.

He has been charged with bank robbery. His photo is attached.

At 11:44 a.m., a man walked into the SunTrust Bank at 1801 W. Broad St. and passed a note to the teller that demanded money. He did not display a weapon and left on foot.

Swansboro West Walk Through

Swansboro West Walk Through

The Richmond Police Department’s Command Staff will join Second Precinct Sector 211 Lt. Michael Bender for a walk through the Swansboro West neighborhood this evening.

Officers will meet at 6 p.m. today at the intersection of E. 37^th and McRand streets, and spread out through the neighborhood from there.

They will reinforce the Department's strong relationship with the Hull Street-Midlothian Civic Association while engaging the citizens who live in the neighborhood.

Command Staff members and officers will discuss safety tips and ask what residents would like to see more of from Richmond Police.
