During Richmond Police Department’s Annual Salute toExcellence Awards
When: 11:30 a.m., Tomorrow, Thursday, May 26, 2022
What: Mayor Levar Stoney and Richmond Police Chief Gerald Smith will present Police Bars, medals and awards to more than 50 officers and detectives honoring extraordinary service, accomplishments, acts of heroism and bravery within the past year.
Officers Rashad Martin and Jason Scott who were shot in the line of duty in 2020 will receive the Medal of Honor.
Nine officers will receive the Life Saving Bar for their acts of bravery and service to preserve life.
As a cornerstone of the Department, 15 officers will be recognized for their ability to de-escalate volatile situations and prevent potential tragedy.
The Rookie of the Year from the 121st Basic Recruit Class will be announced in addition to numerous other awards and commendations.
Where: Richmond Police Department Training Academy 1202 W. Graham Road

Chief of Police will host a panel of award recipients who will be available for questions surrounding the incidents and actions that lead to receiving their award:
De-escalation Bar Recipient: This award recipient demonstrated a high level of skill to de-escalate a situation and bring safe resolution to a situation that could have threatened public safety. Hear what is involved in scenarios like these and how training and skill is executed.
Medal of Valor Recipient: This recipient exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save another person’s life. Hear about the incident that occurred and what this officer is being recognized for.
