The Richmond Police Department has placed
several charges against Roderick Hardy, 29, of the 15000 block of Cox Road,
Church Road, VA, in connection with an officer-involved shooting yesterday on
the city’s south side.
Hardy has been charged with Assault
on a Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and
Brandishing a Firearm.
“We are in the early stages of an
active investigation and we need time to complete it,” said RPD Chief Alfred
Durham. “The investigation should be allowed to run its course.”
At approximately 10:52 a.m., RPD
officers attempted to question Hardy for a suspicious incident that occurred in
the parking lot of a motel in the 6300 block of Midlothian Turnpike. As Hardy
attempted to flee the scene he displayed a handgun which he then pointed at the
officers. In response, one officer fired his service weapon, striking Hardy one
time.
Hardy was transported to a local
hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his abdomen.
Detectives with the Force
Investigation Team are investigating the incident and will present their report
to the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. An element of that investigation will
be video evidence that has been secured and is being reviewed.
A booking photograph of Hardy is not
yet available.
