Man Arrested in Fairfield Avenue Homicide

A Chesterfield County man is facing two felony charges in connection with a homicide that occurred Sunday in the east end neighborhood of Eastview.

Antonio L. Morris, 27, of the 500 block of Rosegill Road in North Chesterfield, was arrested today without incident by the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force. He is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and conspiracy to commit murder. His booking photo is attached.

“This incident occurred in a residential area where there are a number of homes and apartments close together,” said Lt. Cynthia Hayes with the Major Crimes Division. “We’re asking anyone who saw or heard anything out of the ordinary to call us. Detectives are still actively investigating this incident and additional information will help solidify their case against those responsible for this violent crime.”

Shortly before 1 a.m., officers were called to the 2000 block of Fairfield Avenue for a report of a shooting. When officers and medical personnel arrived, they found Alton L. Neal, 37, of the 2100 block of Cedar Street, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Second Arrest in Chamberlayne Avenue Homicide

A Richmond man wanted in connection with an August homicide that occurred in the Ginter Park neighborhood was arrested last week on two felony charges.

Bernardo L. Jones Sr, 20, of the 3900 block of Chamberlayne Avenue, was arrested on November 23. He is charged with conspiracy to commit murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His booking photo is attached.

“Jones, who has been running from authorities since August, was apprehended last Wednesday by diligent First Precinct officers who took him into custody without incident,” said Captain James Laino with the Major Crimes Division. “Thanks to the dedication of investigators and officers and their unrelenting pursuit of justice, the individuals responsible for this homicide have been taken off the streets.”

In September, Demontrell C. Hurdle, 30, of the 3900 block of Chamberlayne Avenue, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Around midnight on August 21, officers were called to the 3900 block of Chamberlayne Avenue for a report of a person down. They arrived to find Desmond L. Holmes, 32, of the 7900 block of Tamarind Place in Henrico County, down and unresponsive in the parking lot of an apartment building. Holmes had suffered an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Statement from Chief Durham Regarding Providence Park Homicide Suspect

“I have spoken to the family of the young man whose photographs were inadvertently released yesterday, identifying him as the suspect in the murder last Friday of George Carrington, III. While the name of the suspect – Ishmael Brown – was correct in the release, the photographs were of another person. I have personally apologized to the family for what happened. It should never have occurred. After meeting with my detectives, I have concluded it was an honest mistake. New measures are now in place to prevent this from happening in the future. All photographs will be more closely vetted before they are released the public. “

“Meanwhile, we still need the community’s help to locate the suspect, Ishmael Brown. Investigators have been working on this case around-the-clock to bring closure to the victim’s family. Their ultimate goal, to solve this crime, remains unchanged.”

Victim Identified in Fairfield Avenue Homicide

Richmond Police detectives have identified the victim in a homicide that occurred this morning in the city’s east end as Alton L. Neal, 37, of the 2100 block of Cedar Street.

Shortly before 1 a.m., officers were called to the 2000 block of Fairfield Avenue for a report of a shooting. When officers and medical personnel arrived, they found an adult male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives are in the early stages of this investigation. A medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

Richmond Police detectives have identified the victim in a homicide that occurred yesterday in the Providence Park neighborhood as George M. Carrington III, 17, of Chimborazo Boulevard.

At approximately 5:39 p.m. yesterday, officers who were in the area for an unrelated incident heard a loud crash at the 600 block of Milton Street. Upon arrival, they observed an overturned white Buick sedan. The victim was found outside of the vehicle and had been shot. He was pronounced dead on the scene. At this time, detectives are investigating this incident as a homicide.

A medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death. Police are still investigating.

Detectives are actively pursuing all available leads in the case and continue to gather information. They do not believe the incident to be a random act.

Protect Against Cold Weather Car Theft

Colder weather is on its way and warming up the car will become part of many city residents’ routine as temperatures drop. Richmond Police urge citizens not leave running vehicles unattended, even for a short time.

“Thieves see a running car with keys in the ignition as an opportunity,” said Fourth Precinct Sergeant Brian Prendergast. “When you’re rushing to get everyone ready in the morning, a few minutes to warm the car up can seem inconvenient, but staying with your vehicle eliminates the risk of it being stolen while you’re inside the house.”

Prendergast noted that during the past week there have been eight motor vehicle thefts in Fourth Precinct, which includes Downtown, Scott’s Addition and Highland Park. Five of those thefts were from cars that were unlocked and running.

Taking the following precautions can help secure a vehicle and prevent crimes of opportunity such as motor vehicle theft or theft from motor vehicles.

·         Lock car doors. Regardless of where it’s parked, lock up and keep valuables out of sight.

·         Never leave keys inside the car. It makes the vehicle an easy target.

·         Don’t leave a running vehicle unattended, even for a few minutes.

Disposing Prescription Drugs is Easy as 1..2..3

The Richmond Police Department and CVS Pharmacy have teamed up to provide citizens with a free, safe and easy way to dispose of expired or unwanted prescription drugs. Bright red prescription drug disposal bins have been placed in Richmond Police headquarters and all four precincts and will be available year-round.

This new program follows Drug Take-Back Day, a bi-annual initiative hosted by the Richmond Police Department, in conjunction with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, giving citizens an opportunity to safely dispose of medications. On Oct. 22, residents turned in 333 pounds of prescription drugs at two collection sites in the city.

Improper disposal of prescription medication is a public safety issue that can lead to accidental poisoning, overdose, abuse and illegal sales. These medications cannot be turned in to your local pharmacy. Residents also are asked not to flush the prescriptions into the sewer system for environmental reasons.

Disposing of these medications is easy as 1, 2 and 3:

1. Find Richmond Police headquarters or your closest precinct.
2. Inside the location, find the red CVS Pharmacy prescription disposal bin.
3. Pull the lid and drop your medication(s).

Suspects Sought in Church Hill North Shooting

The Richmond Police Department is asking for the public’s help to locate the suspects (in the attached photos) who are wanted in connection to a double shooting that took place earlier this week in the Church Hill North neighborhood.
Monte O. Robinson (a.k.a. “Chub”), 20, of the 900 block of North 28^th Street and Josiah C.M. Wyche (a.k.a. “Gucci”), 20, of the 2900 block of Kane Street are both charged with attempted first degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, police responded to the intersection of North 31st and T Streets for a report of random gunfire. When officers arrived, they found an adult male victim suffering from life-threatening injuries resulting from a gunshot wound. Afterward, a second adult male was located with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. They were both transported to a local hospital. One victim is still suffering from life-threatening injuries. The second victim was treated and later released.

Robinson is described as a black male with a medium complexion, brown eyes and hair. He is 5’5” in height and approximately 150 pounds in weight.

Wyche is described as a black male with a dark complexion, black hair, and brown eyes. He is 5’0” in height and approximately 150 pounds in weight.

Both suspects are considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. Anyone who sees these individuals are asked to call police immediately.

Suspect Sought in Bank Robbery

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the suspect in the attached photos who robbed a bank today at the corner of Walmsley and Broad Rock boulevards.

At approximately 11:28 a.m., the suspect entered the BB&T Bank at 4719 Walmsley Boulevard and passed a note to the teller demanding money. After taking cash the suspect left the bank towards Walmsley Boulevard.

The suspect is described as a Latino male in his 30’s with a mustache. He wore khaki trousers, a black ‘bomber-style’ fur cap with ear flaps, work boots and a plaid shirt. The suspect appeared to stutter when he spoke.

Prevent Package Theft This Holiday Season

There’s a chill in the air, festive decorations are beginning to pepper city streets and stores are releasing their Black Friday ads, which means the holiday shopping season is underway. Richmond Police detectives want to help shoppers protect their gifts this year.

While many shoppers will flock to local stores to snag holiday deals, others will find their incredible savings online, where as much as $117 billion in sales is expected this year, according to the National Retail Federation.  As those purchases are made, packages will arrive on shoppers’ doorsteps – which may not be the safest place to have them delivered.

“Online shopping is convenient, but having a package you’re anxiously waiting for stolen from your porch is anything but,” said Third Precinct Officer John Raina. “Package theft is a crime of opportunity, and shoppers can take several steps to protect their presents from thieves looking to take advantage.”

As part of the Richmond Police Department’s holiday crime prevention efforts, officers are passing out fliers (see images below) highlighting holiday shopping and package theft prevention safety tips.

Here are some tips to help ensure holiday packages arrive safely this season.

 

• Consider having packages delivered to the store or a place of employment.
• Ask a family member or trusted neighbor to receive your parcels.
• Pick up packages at a local distribution center.
• Request signature on delivery.

Arrest Made in Orcutt Lane Shooting

A Richmond man is facing multiple felony charges in connection with a shooting that occurred last Saturday in the South Garden neighborhood.

Milton A. White, Jr, 22, of the 3400 block of Clydewood Avenue, turned himself into authorities last night. He is charged with breaking and entering, malicious discharge of a firearm within a dwelling and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His booking photo is attached.

At approximately 10:43 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, officers responded to the 4900 block of Orcutt Lane for a report of a person shot. They quickly located an adult male inside a residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Suspect Sought in Semmes Avenue Robbery

The Richmond Police Department is asking for the public’s help to identify the man in the attached photo who is a suspect in a robbery at a convenience store which took place last week.

At approximately 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, officers responded to 2107 Semmes Avenue to investigate a larceny. The suspect entered the store and began to browse several items near register. The victim stated it appeared the suspect was concealing items underneath his sweatshirt and asked if he was going to purchase the items. As he approached her, the suspect said, "I got to get it," and pushed his way behind the counter. He then took several items, including cartons of cigarettes, and fled the scene.

The suspect is described as a black male with a goatee. He has a thin frame, approximately 6`3” to 6’4” in height, 220 pounds in weight. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a white T-shirt underneath a black pullover sweatshirt, a black knit cap and jeans.

Victim Identified in Ivymount Road Death Investigation

November 14, 2016

Richmond Police detectives have identified the victim in a fatal shooting that took place yesterday morning in the Elkhardt neighborhood as Jovante R. Jackson, 25, of the 2900 block of N. Parham Road. 

Around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 13, multiple calls reporting random gunfire and one call in reference to a person shot were received. Officers responded and located Jackson, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, lying in the parking lot. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Detectives are working this shooting as a death investigation at this time.

Two Arrested on Downtown Expressway

November 10, 2016

Last night at approximately 11:40 p.m., a large group of individuals walked down the Second Avenue off-ramps on both sides of the Downtown Expressway, walked across the travel lanes and sat down, blocking the roadway.

Officers from the Richmond Police Department responded to the south side of the roadway and State Police responded to the north side.

Department officers repeatedly asked the group to leave the roadway, but they refused.

Department officers dispersed the crowd and made two arrests. A female, Haley A. Reynolds, 22, of the 1000 block of West Franklin Street, and a male, Tion D. Edmonds, 18, of the 11800 block of Buchanan Court in Fredricksburg, were arrested.

They were both charged with unlawful assembly and pedestrian in the roadway. They were given summonses and released at the scene.

The roadway opened to traffic at approximately 12:15 a.m. this morning.

Suspect Sought in Sexual Assault/Rape

Richmond Police detectives are asking for the public’s help to locate a suspect in a sexual assault.

Defrederick Young, Jr., 34, of the 1600 block of North 28^th Street, is wanted for the rape of someone known to him. It happen last July.

“We believe Young is being sheltered; being helped by others,” said Major Crime Lieutenant Donald Davenport. “They need to know that they can be charged with harboring a fugitive.”

Young is described as a black male, 5’ 09” tall, weighing approximately 160 pounds. He has tattoos on both of his arms and his neck. A photograph is attached.

Victim Identified in Marshall Street Homicide

November 10, 2016

Richmond Police detectives have identified the victim in a homicide that occurred yesterday in the Jackson Ward neighborhood as Tyrell L. Johnson, 22, of the 1400 of Gavestone Court.

At approximately 2:18 p.m. yesterday, officers responded to the 300 block of W. Marshall Street for a report of a person shot. They arrived and located a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound lying on the sidewalk. A second victim, who suffered several abrasions, was located nearby.

Both victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Johnson succumbed to his injuries later that afternoon.

Detectives are actively pursuing all available leads in the case and continue to gather information about the incident.

2016 Richmond Marathon Traffic Advisory

Early Saturday morning runners will take to city streets for the 2016 Richmond Marathon. Numerous “No Parking” zones and street closures will be in effect as a result.

The 8K race will begin at 7 a.m. at Eighth and Broad streets. At 7:30 a.m., runners participating in the half-marathon start from Seventh and Broad streets. The marathon begins at 7:45 a.m. at the intersection of Fifth and Grace streets.

“No Parking” zones along Fifth Street between Byrd and Tredegar streets will go into effect at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 11. Closures on Broad Street between N. 12^th Street and Boulevard will be enforced starting at midnight Saturday, November 12. Other “No Parking” zones will take effect at 3 a.m. Saturday.

Street closures along Tredegar Street between S. Seventh Street and Brown’s Island will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 11. Other closures throughout the city will be effective at 4 a.m. the day of the marathon. Major thoroughfares that will be affected include Broad Street, Belvidere Street and the Lee Bridge.

Missing Woman Sought

The Richmond Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing woman, Willie Mae White, who may appear confused. Her photo is attached.

White, 86, was last seen around 9 a.m. yesterday in the 1400 block of Chambers Street, which is in the Bellemeade section of Richmond near Jefferson Davis Highway.

She is described as a black female with grey hair, 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing about 130 pounds. She was wearing a white and pink shirt with white, black and grey sweater. She was wearing blue pants and is possibly wearing two different colored shoes.

RPD Asks for Help to Identify Person of Interest in Hull Street Homicide

Richmond Police detectives are asking for the public’s help to identify the man in the attached photo who may have valuable information about a fatal shooting overnight on the city’s south side.

Around 1:14 a.m., officers were called to the 2700 block of Hull Street for a report of a shooting. They quickly located a person with gunshot wounds – a man dressed as a woman – lying unresponsive on the ground. He was transported to a local hospital where, at 10:16 a.m., he was pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as William D. Norwood, 30, of the 3800 block of Caulder Street.

Although it is still early in their investigation, RPD detectives believe the man in the photo may have been nearby at the time of the shooting. They would like to speak with him about what he may have seen and heard. He was last seen leaving the area in a dark colored sedan, possibly a Hyundai Sonata.

He is described as a black male, 30-40 years old, 6’2”- 6’4” tall, weighing approximately 290 pounds.

Detectives are confident they will be able to provide the public with a much better look at the man once the photo is enhanced. They are hopeful he may even contact them before that occurs.

RPD Investigates Homicide on Hull Street

November 6, 2016

The Richmond Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred overnight on the city’s south side.

Around 1:14 a.m., officers were called to the 2700 block of Hull Street for a report of a shooting. They quickly located a person with gunshot wounds – a man dressed as a woman – lying unresponsive on the ground. He was transported to a local hospital where, at 10:16 a.m., he was pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as William D. Norwood, 30, of the 3800 block of Caulder Street.

RPD detectives have interviewed a few people, but there are others they would like to hear from; especially those who were in the area last night or may have known the victim.

“We would like to speak to anyone who may have information about Mr. Norwood – his activity that night and possible associates,” said Lt. Donald Davenport. “We have interviewed a Good Samaritan who stopped to render aid, but there were others in the area, too, last night. We would like them to give us a call.”
