Precinct of the Year Flag-Raising Recognizes Significant Crime Reduction
WHAT:
Second Precinct raises the “Precinct of the Year” flag
WHEN:
1 p.m. TOMORROW, Friday, February 7
WHERE:
177 E. Belt Boulevard
BACKGROUND: Mayor
Danny Avula, Chief Rick Edwards and RPD Command Staff will present to Second
Precinct Captain Kelly O’Connell the Crime Reduction Award flag, the annual
recognition for the precinct which recorded the greatest yearly crime
reduction. Precinct personnel and community members will gather as the flag is
raised for display throughout the year.
“Overall, Second Precinct
does an excellent job serving the entire community, which is not necessarily
reflected in crime data,” said Chief Edwards. “It is gratifying,
however, that crime reductions accompanied their other successes.”
Second Precinct marked
decreases in violent crime (-6%) and property crime (-6%) for an overall
decrease in major crimes reported (-6%).
“We are thrilled to be
able to display this flag over our precinct this year,” said Second
Precinct Captain O’Connell. “It is a symbol to our community of the
excellent work done in 2024 by the officers, detectives, professional staff and
leadership. Obviously, the drop in violent crime, led by the 36% decrease in
homicides, is important, but we are particularly pleased with the decreases in
property crime, including 27% drop in burglaries.”
