Quick Arrests Made in Downtown Incident

First Precinct officers quickly arrested two men after a large fight that occurred around 2 a.m. today on East Cary Street. At approximately 2:14 a.m., officers were called to a report of a fight in the 1500 block of East Cary Street. As officers pulled up, they heard gunshots and saw a man shooting a firearm. With the assistance of other officers, they quickly took him into custody as well as detained other individuals. After further investigation, they have charged Melvin Jones, 29, of the 3800 block of Flat Field Terrace, with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, reckless handling of a firearm and resisting arrest. His mugshot is attached. A second man was also arrested for an outstanding warrant. Officers also seized two firearms. No one was injured.
