Arrest Made in Mechanicsville Turnpike Shooting

Detectives with the Richmond Police Department, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force, have made an arrest in relation to a shooting that occurred this month on Mechanicsville Turnpike.

At approximately 7:16 p.m., on Thursday, February 13, officers were called to a convenience store in the 1600 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike for the report of a person shot. Officers arrived and found an adult male in the store who had suffered an apparent gunshot wound from a shooting that had occurred just outside the store. He was transported to a local hospital with an injury that was considered life threatening.

Detectives arrested Deangelo Hunt, 38, of the 3800 block of Howard Road and charged him with attempted murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His booking photo is attached.

Arrests Made in West Charity Street Homicide

Detectives with the Richmond Police Department have made two arrests in relation to last week’s homicide in Gilpin Court of Katrez T. Bryant, 18, of the 1000 block of St. Peter Street.

At approximately 5:40 p.m., on Monday, February 17, officers on patrol heard several gunshots. They responded to the scene and quickly located Bryant, lying on the second floor landing of an apartment building in the 200 block of West Charity Street. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries that same evening.

Detectives arrested Melvin M. Davis, 26, of the 3400 block of Enslow Avenue and Kahlil J. Pryor, 24, of the 2200 block of North 25th Street and have charged each with conspiracy to commit murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Their booking photos are attached.

Fatal Shootings on Jefferson Davis Highway

The Richmond Police Department is investigating an incident where two males were fatally shot this morning on Jefferson Davis Highway.

At approximately 3:00 a.m., a random gunfire call was received from the 1500 block of Jefferson Davis Highway, followed closely by a call of a person down. Officers arrived and found two adult males in a parking lot of an apartment building, down and unresponsive. They had each suffered an apparent gunshot wound and were pronounced dead at the scene. The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

The location of these death investigations, off the northbound lanes of Jefferson Davis Highway in front of a small apartment building, is in the Bellemeade section of the roadway near some industrial businesses. Major Crimes detectives are asking anyone who may have been driving in this area in the early morning hours to contact detectives if they saw anything that could have been related to these shootings.

Suspect Sought in Pink Street Package Theft

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the suspect in a package theft that occurred on Pink Street last week. 

Sometime between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday, February 10 an unknown man was seen on a security camera stealing a package from the porch of a home in the 900 block of Pink Street. He then runs away on foot.

Pedestrian struck in a Hit & Run Crash on Magnolia Street in north Richmond

The Richmond Police Department’s Special Operations Division-Traffic Crash Team is investigating a Hit & Run crash that occurred in the late evening yesterday in the City’s Northside.

On Thursday evening, February 20, 2020, between 8:50 p.m. and 9:10 p.m., an unidentified vehicle traveling east in the 2200 block of Magnolia Street struck and seriously injured a male pedestrian wearing a yellow and white coat who was walking along Magnolia Street.

The driver of the striking vehicle fled the scene without stopping to render aid with the last known direction of travel as heading east on Magnolia Street towards Mechanicsville Turnpike.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in life-threatening condition.

Two Arrested – One Sought in Gilpin Court Rape

The Richmond Police Department has arrested two suspects and is looking for a third for a rape and abduction that occurred in Gilpin Court earlier this year.

Currently in custody are:
·       Herbert E. Smith, Jr., 19, of the 1100 block of North 2nd Street – arrested 1/28/20
·       Zekhaire A. Robinson, 20, of the 1700 block of Carlisle Avenue – arrested 2/16/20

Both men have both been charged with rape and abduction in connection with a sexual assault on an adult female in an apartment in Gilpin Court on January 25th.

A third suspect, Shaquan H. Hill, 21, of the 1100 block of North 2nd Street, is still being sought. Smith is described as a black male, 5’ 6” and 170 pounds.

Victim Identified in West Charity Street Homicide

The Richmond Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred yesterday in Gilpin Court.

At approximately 5:40 p.m., Monday, February 17, RPD officers on patrol heard several gunshots. They responded to the scene and quickly located the victim, lying on the second floor landing of an apartment building in the 200 block of West Charity Street. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 6:21 p.m.

The victim has been identified as Katrez T. Bryant, 18, of the 1000 block of St. Peter Street.

Shortly after the shooting, another victim, a juvenile male, arrived by personal vehicle at a local hospital. He suffered life-threatening gunshot injuries.

Victim Identified, Vehicle Sought in Redd Street Homicide

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim in yesterday’s homicide in Mosby Court as Kieshell L. Walker, 25, of the 3300 block of Nine Mile Road. Detectives are seeking information on a vehicle of interest in this investigation.

At approximately 6:23 p.m., officers responded to a call for a person shot. They located Walker, an adult female, lying on the ground at the corner of Redd and Coalter Streets. She was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injury later that evening.

Detectives are seeking information about a newer model midsize four-door sedan, silver or gray in color, with a glass panoramic roof, which was seen on video near the scene of the shooting. A photo of the vehicle is attached and a video of the vehicle will be sent separately.

Suspects Sought in Gaming Machine Larceny on Mechanicsville Turnpike

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the three individuals in the attached photos, who are suspected of breaking into gaming machines at a business and stealing more than $3,000.

Between 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Monday, February 3, the suspects entered Stop & Go, a convenience store located at 1600 Mechanicsville Turnpike, and then spent time playing one of the gaming machines.  They eventually used a key to open the machine and took out more than $3,000.  The suspects then left together in a newer model black Jeep Grand Cherokee, which they parked in front of the store.

·       Suspect 1: Last seen wearing white long sleeve shirt, white fitted cap with a logo, white pants, and white & metallic gold Jordan 11 low-top sneakers.
·       Suspect 2: Last seen wearing black long sleeve shirt, red fitted cap with Philadelphia Phillies logo, dark denim jeans with patches on the front, and brown & black UGG boots.
·       Suspect 3: Last seen wearing long sleeve black shirt, black skull cap, black pants, and tan Timberland boots.

Victim Identified, Arrest Made in Fatal Crash on Midlothian Turnpike

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim of yesterday’s fatal crash as Rakeem B. Bland, 30, of the 3800 block of Stockton Street. 

At approximately 8:52 p.m. on Friday, February 14, officers responded to the 3000 block of Midlothian Turnpike for the report of a crash involving two vehicles.  Once on scene, police found Bland unresponsive.  He was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Detectives have determined a Nissan Kicks, driven by Anthoneya A. Hodges, 26, of the 6900 block of Marlowe Road, was traveling on Midlothian Turnpike.  The Kicks then ran a red light at the intersection of Broad Rock Boulevard and struck a GMC Suburban, which was being driven by Bland, causing the Suburban to flip onto its side. 

Hodges was charged with Driving under the Influence, Suspended Operator’s License and Disregarding a Red Light.  Her booking photo is attached.  Additional charges are pending.

Suspects Sought in Credit Card Fraud

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the individuals in the attached photos, who are suspected of using stolen credit and debit cards to make fraudulent purchases at several locations. 

On Wednesday, January 29, the suspects stole a credit card, debit card, and cash from the victim’s coat pocket while the victim was at work in Henrico County.  At approximately 2:20 p.m., the victim began receiving text messages for confirmation about the purchases and then alerted police. 

The suspects were seen on security video using the stolen cards at three 7-Eleven stores in the city (in the 2000 block of W Broad Street, the 1100 block of W Main Street, and the 2900 block of Jefferson Davis Highway) to purchase more than $3,000 in gift cards.

Suspects Sought in Family Dollar Larceny

Just before 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, four suspects entered the family dollar in the 1700 block of Williamsburg Road. They stole at least a $100 worth of laundry detergent pods and other merchandise.

Thousands of people are expected to march near the State Capitol this week for the Virginia March for Life.

Arrest Made after RPD Officers Fired Upon

Last weekend, two Richmond Police Department officers were fired upon as they were driving through Mosby Court. Minutes after the single shot was fired, other RPD officers located and arrested the shooter – a juvenile male.

At approximately 1:40 a.m. Saturday, February 8, two RPD officers reported to dispatch that they had been fired upon in the area of Spotsylvania and Accommodation Streets. Responding officers quickly established a perimeter and arrested the 17 year old gunman.

He has been charged with:
·       Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer
·       Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony
·       Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile
·       Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle

The officers were not injured. Their vehicle was not struck. A small caliber shell casing was recovered at the scene but the firearm has not yet been located.

Arrest Made in Mechanicsville Turnpike Homicide

The Richmond Police Department has made an arrest in connection to a homicide that occurred earlier this week on Mechanicsville Turnpike.

Brian A. Robinson, 33, of the 2700 block of Remington Court was arrested today and has been charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His booking photo will be released once it becomes available.

At around 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5, officers responded to the 804 Market in the 1600 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike for the report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they found Leon Robinson inside, unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced at the scene.

Suspect Sought in Destruction of Property at Law Firm

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the man in the attached photo who intentionally cut the phone and internet cables to a private law firm, five times in the last few weeks. 

Security video shows the suspect outside Tavenner & Beran, PLC, located at 20 N 8th Street, on February 1 at approximately 6:08 p.m.  This is the most recent incident. 

Detectives believe during the first incident on January 13, the suspect opened the electrical box and cut all the wires inside.  After a lock was installed, he proceeded to cut all the wires to the electrical box (January 15, 18, 21 and February 1).

Suspect Sought in Shoplifting at Carytown Clothing Store

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the woman in the attached photos, who recently stole items from a clothing store in Carytown.

At approximately 4:10 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, officers responded to Zest Clothing & Co., located at 3140 W Cary Street, for the report of a shoplifting.  The suspect took several items into a fitting room, stuffed them into her purse, and walked out of the store.

Detectives believe she then came back the next weekend and stole from the store again.

BACKGROUND:     Chief William Smith, Third Precinct Sector 312 Lt. Frank Scarpa and other Richmond Police Department officers will participate in a walk through in Richmond’s Forest View neighborhood at 5:30 p.m. today. During the walk, RPD officers will speak with community members about safety concerns they may have and what they would like to see from the Richmond Police Department.

Newly promoted Sector 312 Lt. Frank Scarpa says they want to remind neighbors to look out for each other to help keep the neighborhood safe.

“If you see something, say something” said Lt. Scarpa.  “We want people to know their neighbors. Check in on each other, lend a helping hand, and report suspicious incidents.”

This event is the latest in a series of walks conducted by the Richmond Police Department in neighborhoods throughout the city.

Victim Identified in Southlawn Avenue Homicide, Detectives Investigate Possible Related Incidents

Richmond Police Department detectives have identified the victim in Saturday’s homicide in Hillside Court as Sharmar Hill, Jr., 3, of the 1700 block of Southlawn Avenue.

On Saturday at approximately 4:09 p.m., Richmond Police Department officers were called to the 1700 block of Southlawn Avenue for reports of random gunfire and for a report of a young male shot. Officers arrived and found Hill, who had suffered an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injury.

Detectives are currently investigating several incidents that occurred this weekend, near the homicide incident, and are asking the public to come forward with information:

·       On Friday at approximately 9:58 p.m., officers were called to the 2400 block of Columbia Street for the report of a robbery/carjacking that occurred in the 2600 block of Berwyn Street. A female ride share driver reported two male customers brandished a firearm and robbed her of personal items. She fled on foot and the two males drove away in her newer model Kia, white in color.

·       Just before midnight on Friday, and twice more early on Saturday, officers were called to the 1600 block of Rosecrest Avenue for calls of random gunfire. This area is a short distance from the Saturday homicide on Southlawn Avenue. One witness reported seeing a newer model vehicle, white in color, leaving the scene.

·       Detectives responded to the 1700 block of Southlawn Avenue for the homicide investigation. Information was received indicating a white vehicle sped away after the shooting.

·       Detectives developed a suspect in the carjacking and disseminated the information. In the early hours of Sunday, officers in First Precinct located the suspect, Antonio L. Harris, 21, of the 1300 block of Evergreen Avenue, and arrested him. He has been charged with carjacking and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His booking photo is attached. Further charges are possible following consultation with the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney.

The incidents of random gunfire from late Friday and early Saturday in the Hillside Court neighborhood, which caused damage to a vehicle and a doorway but did not cause injury, are of interest to detectives in this homicide investigation. Vehicle Sought, Pedestrian Identified in Fatal Hull Street Road Hit and Run

The Richmond Police Department’s Crash Team is asking for the public’s help in locating a vehicle believed to be involved in a fatal hit and run that occurred yesterday on Hull Street Road.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 2, a passerby saw a male down in the roadway in the 5200 block of Hull Street Road and called police. Officers arrived and found Jamie Melendez-Cortez, 31, of the 6700 block of Jefferson Davis Highway down and unresponsive in an eastbound lane of the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators with the Crash Team believe Melendez-Cortez was crossing Hull Street Road from north to south when he was struck by an older model, two-tone pick-up truck (photo attached).  The collision occurred between 2 a.m. – 2:30 a.m. near the businesses, “Tony’s Auto Repair” and “New and Used Tires Store.”  The driver did not stop and the vehicle was last seen turning north onto Warwick Road.

The exact make and model of the truck are unknown at this time.  It is possibly missing a right front hubcap.

Third Suspect Apprehended in Homicide at Thurman Street Fire

The Richmond Police Department, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force, arrested a third suspect wanted in connection to the homicide prior to a fire on Thurman Street last November.

On Friday evening, detectives arrested Johntae D. Sauls, 18, of the 3400 block of Maury Street, without incident. He has been charged with murder, robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. His booking photo is attached.

“We’d like to thank the media in sharing information and the public for providing information that resulted in these three arrests,” said Major Crimes Lt. Lisa Watson.

Also charged in this incident is Roquanta R. Beard, 18, of the 3400 block of Ritter Street and Marquise J. Culpepper, 20, of the 2400 block of Hull Street.

At approximately 2:22 a.m. on November 1, the Richmond Fire Department responded to the 00 block of Thurman Street for the report of a warehouse fire. After the fire was suppressed, firefighters found Anthony S. Wheeler, 35, of Charles City, VA, who had suffered apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pedestrian Fatally Struck in Hull Street Road Hit and Run

The Richmond Police Department’s Crash Team is investigating a fatal hit and run that occurred this morning on Hull Street Road.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., a passerby saw a person down in the roadway in the 5200 block of Hull Street Road and called police. Officers arrived and found an adult male down and unresponsive in an eastbound lane of the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Crash Team responded, collected evidence, took measurements and are investigating. Investigators believe the pedestrian was crossing Hull Street Road from north to south when the male was struck by an eastbound vehicle between 2 a.m. – 2:30 a.m. The driver did not stop and the vehicle left the scene eastbound on Hull Street Road. The collision occurred near the businesses, “Tony’s Auto Repair” and “New and Used Tires Store.”

Investigators are attempting to locate the vehicle and driver. The vehicle may possibly be silver or gray in color with heavy damage to the front end/right passenger front with front windshield damage.

Officers arrived and found a 3-year-old male who had suffered an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injury.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Detectives with the Major Crimes unit and forensics investigators responded. Detectives interviewed people who were in the area of Southlawn Avenue, a busy street in the Hillside neighborhood, and are working this death investigation.
