Winter Storm Driving Tips

January 6, 2017

The Richmond Police Department wants everyone to stay safe during this winter storm. Please review these Driving Dos and Don’ts:

DO allow extra time to arrive at your destination.

DO drive slowly and deliberately. Avoid aggressive braking, acceleration and steering.

DO fully clean the snow off your vehicle before driving.

DO have an emergency kit in your vehicle should you become disabled or broken down. Warm clothes should be included.

DO avoid operating bicycles and mopeds on the roadways.

DO pay special attention to bridges and overpasses as they will freeze before roadways.

DO park in your driveway prior to the storm. This allows for ease of snow removal.

DO keep your charged cell phone with you in case of an emergency.

DO NOT follow too closely to other vehicles. Give yourself plenty of distance to brake and stop.

DO NOT travel unless necessary.

DO NOT travel at excessive speeds. Four wheel drive does not mean four wheel stop.

DO NOT sit in the car idling unless the tailpipe is clear of obstructions.

DO NOT abandon your vehicle in the roadway. Your vehicle will be towed.

DO NOT leave your vehicle running and unattended, even just to warm it up could result in the theft of your vehicle.
