BACKGROUND:
This summer the Richmond Police Department partnered again with Virginia State Police to focus on reducing violent crime in the city. They confiscated over 130 illegal firearms and served nearly 300 arrest warrants as part of their combined Fugitives and Firearms Initiative.

“FFI makes a difference in Richmond, no doubt about it,” Chief Alfred Durham said. “These officers work together to get firearms off the street and put wanted parties behind bars by targeting certain areas of the city.”

FFI has played a major role in a reduction of violent crime during this time period. From June 1 to September 6, 2017, the city saw an 8 percent reduction in violent crime and a 7 percent reduction in overall crime.

Chief Durham, Virginia State Police Capt. Chumley, the FFI officers and the officer in charge of this summer’s initiative – Lt. Jeremy Sayles – will discuss its impact and some of the stories behind the fugitives and firearms brought in during FFI at Friday’s news conference.

Members of the media are encouraged to attend.
