The Richmond Police
Department has added information to the RPD website about the training its
officers receive when dealing with people in crisis - called Crisis
Intervention Training or simply CIT.
“Posting the CIT
materials on-line is yet another step in my on-going effort to increase the
level of transparency between the Department and the general public,” said RPD
Chief Alfred Durham. “The CIT course gives officers an understanding of what
may be involved and strategies that could be used to defuse the situation.”
The CIT course covers a
variety of issues that relate to people in crisis including substance abuse,
mental illness and suicide prevention. There are several segments to the course
including lectures, discussions and role playing. Approximately 500 RPD
officers have been trained, principally those who are most likely to be called
to crisis situations.
So far this year, the
Richmond Police Department has added additional materials to the RPD website
including:
- State Training Manual & Compulsory Minimum Training Standards
- Basic Recruit Training – 32 week schedule
- Basic Recruit Community Focus Training
- Use of Force General Order
- Crime Statistics – updated weekly
- Internal Affairs Complaints – updated monthly
