Richmond Police detectives are investigating a homicide that occurred overnight on West Broad Street.
At approximately 2:44 a.m., Sunday, July 24, RPD officers were called to the 1300 block of West Broad Street for reports of random gunfire and persons shot. They quickly located three adult victims with gunshot wounds inside the common area of an apartment building. The victims were transported to a local hospital.
One of those victims, Erik R. McCorkle, 24, of the 1800 block of Regal Drive, Highland Springs, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The other two victims remain hospitalized; the female is in serious condition, the male has non-life threatening wounds.
Detectives are in the early stages of the investigation, but they believe the shooting stemmed from an argument between two groups of people. No detailed suspect descriptions are yet available.
“We know there were many people who witnessed this shooting and have valuable information to share,” said Major Crimes Captain James J. Laino. “With the right tip, we can make a quick arrest in this case.”
Even though the shooting occurred near the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, RPD detectives do not believe the incident is connected with the university. All three victims are not VCU students.
