Victim Identified in East End Homicide


August 29, 2017

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim of yesterday’s homicide as Joie M. Wyche, 26, of the 1700 block of N. 29th Street.
At approximately 4:51 p.m., an officer in the area heard multiple gunshots coming from the 1800 block of N. 30th Street. The officer arrived and located Wyche suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and a short time later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Persons of Interest Sought in Aggravated Assault During Fan Demonstration

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify several persons of interest in the photos who may have information about an aggravated assault which occurred in the Fan neighborhood earlier this month.

At approximately 10:25 p.m. several hundred individuals were gathered in the 1600 block of West Broad Street for a demonstration which began at Abner Clay Park. As the group was marching westbound on West Broad Street, two individuals were involved in a verbal confrontation.


During the exchange, one on the adult males – who is described as a white male with dark hair, dark facial hair and slim build – struck the victim with an unknown object. The suspect and the group soon dispersed and continued marching on West Broad Street toward Allen Street.


The individuals in the attached photos were in close proximity to the suspect and the victim at the time of the assault and may have additional information.

Pedestrian Identified in Fatal Broad Street Collision

A pedestrian involved in a fatal collision with a vehicle earlier this month in the 800 block of East Broad Street has died.

At approximately 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 3, Naomi S. Benoit, 64, of the 2800 block of Kenbury Road, was attempting to cross the North 8th Street crosswalk when she was struck. Benoit succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, August 26. The incident occurred in the intersection of North 8th Street and Broad Street.

The vehicle that struck her, a Chevrolet Sonic, was traveling southbound on North 8th Street making a left turn. The driver stated he did not see the pedestrian walking northbound in the crosswalk.

The driver, De’Jon L. Hicks, 26, of the 00 block of Parham Street, Emporia, Va. was charged with failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian. Additional charges may be pending.

Victim Identified in Green Cove Drive Death Investigation

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim of last night’s shooting as
Karen A. Turner, 33, of the 10400 block of Colony Village Way, North Chesterfield.

Last night at approximately 10:40 p.m., officers were called to the 200 block of Green Cove Drive for the report of a female shot in the leg. Officers responded and located a female with a gunshot wound to the leg, but also found Turner in a nearby vehicle. Turner was unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim was transported to a local hospital with an injury that was not considered life threatening.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Detectives are in the early stages of this death investigation. While all parties in this incident have been identified, no charges have yet been filed.

Green Cove Drive Death Investigation

The Richmond Police Department is investigating an incident in which two persons were shot, one fatally, in the 200 block of Green Cove Drive last night.

At approximately 10:40 p.m., officers were called to Green Cove Drive for the report of a female shot in the leg. Officers responded and located the female with a gunshot wound to the leg, but also found a female nearby in a vehicle who was unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim was transported to a local hospital with an injury that was not considered life threatening.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Suspect Sought in Theft from Restaurant

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the individual in the photos who is suspected of theft from a business in the city’s Southside.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. on Monday, July 17, it was reported that a purse was taken at Taco Bell at 6720 Midlothian Turnpike after the victim placed it in a chair. The suspect and another male then fled the scene.

The suspect is described as a black male with dark hair and a medium complexion. At the time, he was wearing a light-colored tank top, grey shorts, and red tennis shoes.

Victim Identified in Creighton Road Homicide

One of the two females who were shot on Creighton Road yesterday morning has died.

The Richmond Police Department has identified her as Oyana T. Carlyle, 27, of the 1500 block of North 21st Street.

Yesterday at approximately 2:46 a.m., officers were called to the 2100 block of Creighton Road for the report of random gunfire. Officers arrived and found Carlyle and another female who were suffering from gunshot wounds.

They were transported to a local hospital where, yesterday, Carlyle died.


The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Victims Identified in Two Homicides in the City’s East End

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victims in two homicides which occurred last night in Whitcomb Court and the Mosby neighborhood.

Shortly before 11 p.m. last night, police were called to the 2400 block of Carmine Street for a report of a person down. When officers arrived, they found the victim, Justin B. Townsend, 24, of the 16000 block of Flotilla Way, Woodbridge, in the courtyard of an apartment complex with an apparent gunshot wound. Richmond Ambulance Authority transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Fifteen minutes later at approximately 11:15 p.m., police received a call for a shooting in the 1400 block of Coalter Street. When officers found the victim, Broderick F. Jones, 40, of the 1900 block of Accommodation Street, in the stairwell of residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

At this time, detectives do not believe the two incidents are related and are in the early stages of the investigation. The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Persons of Interest Sought in Southside Shooting

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify several persons of interest in the photos who may have information about a shooting which occurred in Southside earlier this month.


Shortly after 1:30 a.m., officers were called to the 600 block of Stockton Street to investigate a shooting. Police were told several witnesses were attending a party on the porch of an apartment complex within the block. Suddenly, several gunshots were fired toward a parked vehicle from an empty, grassy area across the parking lot. Surveillance video shows the vehicle leaving the scene shortly afterward.


When police arrived at the scene, they came upon a victim in the 500 block of Stockton Street and he was soon transported to a local hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. He has since been treated and released.


“There were many witnesses at the time of the shooting and we ask anyone who may know something to contact us,” said Det. J. Baynes. “Any detail – a tattoo, scar, or clothing – or information about these individuals will help us close this case.”

RPD Partners with YMCA, Target for “Shop with a Cop”

BACKGROUND:    In collaboration with the Metro Richmond YMCA’s Bright Beginnings program, “Shop with a Cop” pairs Richmond city youth with a Richmond Police officer in preparation for the upcoming school year.

“The YMCA and Target have been long standing community partners over the years,” said Capt. Daniel Minton. “We are able to engage with children and share a memorable experience.”

Along with helping a child prepare for the upcoming school year, the annual event continues building the foundation of community trust and the youth.

Bright Beginnings is the largest outreach program, servicing over 2,000 children in Central Virginia.

Chief Alfred Durham Provides Remarks on Monument Avenue Demonstration

Yesterday afternoon, police were notified of a candlelight vigil which began at 8:30 p.m. in Abner Clay Park located in the 200 block of West Clay Street. The crowd began to grow and shortly after 10 p.m., approximately 300 demonstrators exited the park toward West Broad Street where they marched westbound. They continued walking to Monument Avenue toward the Robert E. Lee and J.E.B. Stuart Monuments.

After circling back to West Broad Street, moving eastbound toward downtown, the demonstration concluded at 1 a.m. in Abner Clay where the group originated.

Multiple injuries were reported. Police are still investigating these incidents.

There was only one arrest during the demonstration. The individual was charged with disorderly conduct and released at the scene. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

“Serving in a state capital, the Richmond Police Department has years of experience dealing with all manner of rallies, parades, demonstrations and protests. Our goal is to allow citizens to express their First Amendment right to speak their minds while protecting and maintaining the safety of the general public,” said Chief Alfred Durham.


“Our officers are well-trained in crowd management and we have great support from our law enforcement agency partners. We have already begun planning for the event on Sept. 16, should it occur. We will be prepared.”

Person of Interest Sought in Monument Avenue Incident

Richmond Police detectives are asking for the public’s help to identify the man in the attached photo, who is a person of interest in an incident that took place on Monument Avenue.

In the past several days, surveillance video shows an unknown male tampering with a light bulb outside a residence in the 4100 block of Monument Avenue. Surveillance then shows the man walking to a nearby vehicle.

The person of interest is described as a black male with dark hair wearing a white tank top, jeans and dark-colored Nike tennis shoes.

Suspects Sought in Theft from Carytown Business

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the suspects in the photos who reportedly stole jewelry from Richmond Jeweler in the Carytown neighborhood.

At approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, an unknown man and woman entered Richmond Jeweler at 3419 W. Cary St. Surveillance video shows the two suspects with a store employee. The female suspect then turns to the side and at some point reportedly takes the jewelry.

The first suspect is described as a white female with long brown hair between the ages of 35-40. At the time of the incident, she is seen wearing a dark gray T-shirt, a long light-colored skirt, gold earrings, and her hair pulled back. The second suspect is described as a white male with dark hair with a dark-colored beard between the ages of 35-40. The male suspect can be seen wearing glasses, a red T-shirt, and a dark-colored baseball hat.

Community Walk in the John Marshall Neighborhood

BACKGROUND:     Chief Alfred Durham
and Richmond Police Department officers will participate in a walk through Richmond’s John Marshall neighborhood at 5:30 p.m. today. During the walk, RPD officers will speak with community members about safety concerns they may have and hear how the Richmond Police Department can better serve their community.

Sector 412 Lt. KeShawn Manns
has noted increased random gunfire calls in the John Marshall neighborhood. He will discuss the crime trends with residents and will also share information about two open homicide cases.

“Detectives are still investigating two homicide cases, Jerode Greene on January 26 and Jacquesha Clanton on June 15,” Lt. KeShawn Manns said. “We will take the opportunity during this community walk to urge anyone with information about these shootings to contact Major Crimes detectives. That’s how we make Richmond a safer city – by working together.”

This event is the latest in a series of walks conducted by the Richmond Police Department in neighborhoods throughout the city.

Members of the media are encouraged to attend.

Quick Arrest in Gilpin Court Homicide

Richmond Police Department detectives have made a quick arrest following a homicide that occurred overnight in Gilpin Court.

At approximately 9:20 p.m., Saturday, August 5, RPD officers were called to the 1000 block of St. Paul Street for a report of a person who’d been shot. When they arrived they located the victim, Nyjai Johnson, 18, of the 500 block of Bancroft Avenue, outside lying on the ground. He had been shot multiple times.

Johnson was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the exact cause and manner of death.

“With valuable information given to us by members of the community, we were able to quickly identify the gunman,” said Major Crimes Lieutenant Donald Davenport. “Those tips made all the difference.”

Three hours after the shooting, the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force located the arrested the suspect; Garland Davis, 24, of the 1000 block of St. Paul St.

After consulting with Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office, RPD detectives have charged Davis with a single count: Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Additional charges are pending. His booking photo is attached.

Suspects Sought for Burglarizing Store Twice

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the individuals in the attached photos who broke into the same store twice last month.

At approximately 1 a.m. on Tuesday, July 25, and again at approximately 12:43 a.m. on Monday, July 31, the male suspects threw a brick through a window of the Cricket Wireless store, located at 400 Belt Boulevard, entered the store and stole mobile phones and electronic devices.

Suspect Sought in Theft from Apartment Building

Richmond Police detectives need the public’s help to identify the individual in the photos who is suspected of theft from an apartment building in the city’s Scott’s Addition neighborhood.

At approximately 8:02 a.m. on Monday, July 31, it was reported an adult male took an item from a residence in the 3000 block of Norfolk Street.

The suspect is described as a bald, black male with a dark complexion. He is between the ages of 35-45. At the time, he was wearing a gray Polo T-shirt, khaki cargo shorts and dark-colored tennis shoes with white laces. He can also be seen wearing a dark colored baseball cap and a grey backpack.

Victim Identified in James River Drowning

August 2, 2017

The Richmond Police Department has identified the man who drowned in the James River yesterday as John R. Boynes, 89, of the 2700 block of Lauradale Lane.

At approximately 6:26 p.m., a male was reported down and unresponsive in the James River near the 500 block of Tredegar Street. The Richmond Police Department and the Richmond Fire Department responded. The Richmond Fire Department’s River Rescue team brought Boynes to shore and attempted to resuscitate him. Boynes was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

No foul play is suspected.
