Richmond Police Department detectives have made a quick arrest following a homicide that occurred overnight in Gilpin Court.
At approximately
9:20 p.m., Saturday, August 5, RPD officers were called to the 1000 block of
St. Paul Street for a report of a person who’d been shot. When they arrived
they located the victim, Nyjai Johnson, 18, of the 500 block of Bancroft
Avenue, outside lying on the ground. He had been shot multiple times.
Johnson was
transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Medical
Examiner’s Office will determine the exact cause and manner of death.
“With
valuable information given to us by members of the community, we were able to
quickly identify the gunman,” said Major Crimes Lieutenant Donald Davenport.
“Those tips made all the difference.”
Three hours
after the shooting, the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force located the
arrested the suspect; Garland Davis, 24, of the 1000 block of St. Paul St.
After consulting
with Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office, RPD detectives have charged Davis with a
single count: Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Additional
charges are pending. His booking photo is attached.
