The Richmond Police Department is investigating a fatal hit
and run that occurred this weekend on the city’s south side.
At approximately 6:57 p.m., February 17, a two vehicle crash
occurred at the intersection of Maury Street and Perdue Avenue that claimed the
life of Samuel R. Pope, 73, of the 1900 block of Boston Avenue.
Pope was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:51 p.m. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.
The driver of the second vehicle, a black male, fled the scene on foot with an adult female and small child. They have not yet been located.
The RPD Crash Team has determined that Pope was travelling eastbound on Maury Street in pick-up truck when the second vehicle, a four-door sedan travelling northbound on Perdue Avenue, ran a stop sign and collided with Pope’s vehicle. Both vehicles remained at the scene.
Anyone with information about this hit and run is asked to call RPD Crash Team Detective L. Walker at (804) 646-1709 or contact Crime Stoppers at 780-1000 or at www.7801000.com. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.
