Kevon Bynum, charged in the homicides of a mother and her infant daughter at an apartment complex on Midlothian Turnpike in April, and charged in the homicide of a male on Montvale Avenue earlier in April, entered several guilty pleas in court this morning.
At approximately 6:31 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, officers were called to the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike for a shooting. Sharnez Hill, 30, and her daughter, 3 months old, were shot at the scene and transported to a local hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. One other adult female and two juvenile females, 11 and 15, were also injured.
At approximately 4:28 a.m. on April 7, officers were called to the 500 block of Montvale Avenue for the report of a shooting. Officers arrived and located the victim, Vinshaun Johnson, unresponsive in the roadway, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bynum pled guilty to two counts of first degree murder for the homicides of Hill and her daughter and three counts of malicious wounding for the three other shooting victims in the apartment complex. Bynum also pled guilty to first degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony for the homicide of Johnson.
“Richmond Police officers and detectives worked tirelessly following these shootings to successfully identify and arrest the suspects, yet that is only the beginning of these cases,” said RPD Chief Gerald M. Smith. “Here, you also see the results from the dedicated work of Major Crimes detectives coordinated with the determined excellence from the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney to bring about these guilty pleas. I commend all involved in these cases and look forward to additional positive developments from these investigations and prosecutions.”
Bynum has four co-defendants currently awaiting trial.
