WHAT: Torch Run: Fanning the
Flame
WHEN: Thursday, May 24 at 11 a.m.
WHERE: The Place at Innsbrook, 4036-C Cox Road, Glen
Allen, VA 23060
BACKGROUND: The Richmond Police Department will
participate in the annual Special Olympics Virginia Law Enforcement Torch
Run kick-off at The Place at Innsbrook tomorrow morning.
What started in 1981 as
a flicker of hope for Special Olympics has now become a roaring flame of
stability for more than 4.9 million Special Olympics athletes worldwide. This
summer, as we prepare to celebrate the movement’s 50th anniversary, we also
will celebrate the extraordinary partnership between local law enforcement
partners across the commonwealth and Special Olympics Virginia.
During the annual ceremony, “Flame of Hope” will officially be lit as officers prepare to run it thousands of miles to Richmond. The ceremony, which commences the countdown to Summer Games (June 8 to 9 in Richmond), will bring more than 200 law enforcement officers from across Virginia to Innsbrook.
In addition to carrying the flame, this event celebrates the fundraising efforts of the more than 2,000 officers involved in the Torch Run.
