Folks have been keeping more of their
stuff.
That’s the good news as thefts from motor
vehicles have decreased 19% compared to the same time last year. However, there
are still too many people leaving valuables in their cars – and not locking
their car doors.
Earlier this month the Department launched
a campaign to urge people to remove valuables from their cars and lock their
doors. Colorful signs have been posted in parks, parking decks and at entry
points to the James River Park System. An electronic road sign has been moved
to different locations in the city to spread the message. Media interviews and
social media posts have reached many people with the helpful information.
“We are encouraged with the results –
incidents of thefts from motor vehicle are down – but there are still too many
people leaving items in cars,” said Major John O’Kleasky, Area 2 Commander.
“Locking your vehicle is also critical, especially with so many great events
and festivals drawing people to Richmond this time of year. Remember: Lock It
or Lose It.”
If
you see someone walking down the street or in a parking lot checking door
handles – yeah, that’s suspicious, so please call 911.
