The Richmond Police Department is investigating a homicide-suicide that was discovered following a report of a person down yesterday morning.
At approximately 7:57 a.m. on February 3, officers responded
to the 1300 block of East Cary Street where they found Richard Burton, 58,
of the 1800 block of Heckler Street in Henrico County, suffering from what
appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Office of the Chief Medical
Examiner ruled the manner of death suicide.
Investigation of that incident led detectives to conduct a
welfare check on Mr. Burton’s girlfriend. At 6:24 p.m. yesterday, officers
responded to the residence in the 2400 block of Burton Street. Inside they
located the body of Velda L. Garner, 57, of the 2400 block of Burton Street,
who had suffered an apparent gunshot wound.
The case remains under investigation.
