The Richmond Police
Department would like to alert the general public to an event that is expected
to take place on a portion of Monument Avenue this weekend.
The Department has been
informed that from noon until 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 19th, a
southern heritage group will gather at the Jefferson Davis Statue to protest a
recommendation by the Monument Avenue Commission that the statue and
surrounding structure be removed.
“We anticipate a
peaceful event,” said Captain John O’Kleasky of the RPD’s Special Operations
Division. “We ask anyone who shows up on Sunday to remain calm and respect each
other, regardless of their position on the issue. RPD officers will be present
to maintain public safety while allowing everyone to exercise their First
Amendment right to speak freely.”
RPD officers will not
permit anyone to block traffic or act in a disruptive manner.
Monument Avenue will
remain open to vehicular traffic.
