WHEN:                 5:30 p.m. Today, July 25, 2017

WHERE:               1200 Southwood Parkway

BACKGROUND:  Mayor Levar Stoney, Chief Alfred Durham,
and Richmond Police Department officers will participate in a walk through Richmond’s Southwood neighborhood at 5:30 p.m. today. During the walk, RPD officers will speak with community members about safety concerns they may have and what they would like to see from the Richmond Police Department.

Sector 212 Lt. Michael Phibbs
said it has been a challenge to establish trust in this neighborhood, which is primarily Latino. Many are immigrants who fear the police in their own home countries therefore there is some crime that goes unreported.

“Over the past year, the Richmond Police Department collaborated with the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) and community leaders to reduce crime and improve community relations in this neighborhood.”
Lt. Phibbs said. “This community walk is an opportunity for members of the department to speak to residents and assess the success of the program.

This event is the latest in a series of walks conducted by the Richmond Police Department in neighborhoods throughout the city.

Members of the media are encouraged to attend.
