Victim Identified in Vehicle-Train Fatality

The Richmond Police Department’s Special Operations Division Crash Team is investigating a fatality that occurred Sunday evening on the city’s Southside.

At approximately 6:43 p.m. yesterday, a 2017 Ford Taurus was traveling eastbound in the 1700 block of Broad Rock Boulevard. As a train approached, the railroad’s warning system activated its flashing red lights and warning arm. The driver continued to cross the railroad tracks when the vehicle was struck on its left side by an oncoming, southbound Amtrak train.

The driver, Clayon G. Roper, Jr., 24, of the 4200 block of Beth Road, Henrico, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators with the RPD Crash Team responded to the scene, where they interviewed witnesses and took measurements. The crash remains under investigation.
