Victim Identified in Gilpin Court Homicide

The Richmond Police Department has identified the victim in Sunday’s homicide as Carmella D. Winston, 52, of the 100 block of North Ivy Avenue, Henrico.

Yesterday at approximately 2:54 p.m., officers were called to the 00 hundred block of East Hill Street for the report of a person shot.

Officers arrived and found an adult female suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was transported to VCU Medical Center where she died.

The Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.

Detectives believe the victim was a passenger in a parked vehicle near the intersection of St. James and East Hill streets when she was shot.

"A woman riding in a car on a bright Sunday afternoon was struck down by what appears to be random gunfire," said Major Crimes Captain James Laino. "We need anyone with information about this tragic incident to come forward."
